Does anyone remember

when they used to stop NFL games when the crowd was too loud? I think the home crowd could even draw a penalty for being too loud (5 yards or something). I'm pretty sure I'm remembering this correctly and it wasn't even that long ago. WTF was that all about?!?

I remember in the '95 home game vs the Donks, Elway complained to the refs and they warned the crowd, who in turn just got louder on the next play. That's the last time I remember it coming up during a game.

I do remember that ... they gave the crowd (the home team) a delay of game penalty or something ... what was that about?

Yes in the early nineties. I remember SmElway always looking at the officials with an even goofier look on his mug and miming that he couldn't hear. Which for some reason made the crowd get louder.

I remember it being the dumbest thing I had ever seen. I mean, as a Chiefs fan, I loved our home field advantage. This rule tried to take that away. What a crock of crap.

The only time I ever saw that rule come into play was when Elway came to KC. He was a ****.

Yeah, I was there when Elway bitched the refs because we were too loud. We got louder. I honestly don't remember if we got flagged or not.

I remember it being really in vogue for at least a few months. QBs and linemen whining about noise.

It was about the biggest BS rule the NFL came up with. Lets just kill home field advantage and alienate the fans.

yikes

Evidently Pitt Gorilla and I live in bizzaro world, I was thinking of posting the exact question this AM.

I noticed while surfing through some college games today one of thge sideline commentators had a decible meter. She said it was reading 130 db's. Unfortunatly due to homeland security I doubt anyone would be able to sneak one into Arrowhead. Still it would b e interesting to know how loud the crowd noise can become.

I think it was called several times against the Chiefs, but I don't remember it called on any other team/stadium.

Apparently the rule is still on the books.

http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/penaltysummaries

Quote:
Loss of team time out(s) or five-yard penalty on the defense for excessive crowd noise.

As a fan I would say screw that rule and be loud all the time anyway. The refs are NOT going to continue to call that all game long. They will say screw it.

It adopted a noise penalty in 1989, allowing the referee, at the quarterback’s request, to warn the home team that the crowd is being disruptive. The referee, who stands behind the quarterback at the snap, can dock the home team a timeout, or even call a 5-yard penalty, if he decides that linemen cannot hear the snap count.

Mike Pereira, the N.F.L.’s vice president for officiating, has been in the league office for nine years. He said the rule had not been enforced in that time.

“Quite frankly, everybody is doing silent counts now,” Pereira said.

Quarterbacks said that turning to ask a referee for help would only incite the crowd to make more noise.

“Every game I’ve talked to the ref, and they say, ‘Hey, if you think it’s too loud, you can look back,’ ” Manning said. “ ‘Most of the time we’re going to tell you to snap the ball, though. But you can ask for it if you want.’ ”
