Cassel is on target from start to finish with four TDs
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star

SEATTLE | Matt Cassel set the tone for his day with the first snap of Sunday’s game. He dropped back to pass and found Dwayne Bowe for a 14-yard gain.

The two would hook up again 12 more times, with three of those passes resulting in touchdowns. For good measure, Cassel also threw in a fourth scoring pass, this one to Tony Moeaki, in the Chiefs’ 42-24 win over the Seahawks.

The end result was perhaps Cassel’s best day as a Chief. He completed 22 of 32 passes for 233 yards and, for the third straight week, didn’t throw an interception.

“I had high expectations for him in a difficult, hostile environment,” coach Todd Haley said. “You really see some signs of a real good quarterback in how he handles himself. He did a terrific job for the most part down in and down out.”

It all started from the first pass and the first drive. The Chiefs took the opening kickoff and moved 72 yards for the first score of the game.

Cassel was four of five on the drive and ended it by throwing 7 yards to Bowe for the touchdown.

“That was our focus this whole week on the first possession,” said wide receiver Verran Tucker, who caught a 24-yard pass on the opening drive. “We wanted to get off to a quick start and come up with some points. It kind of set the tempo for the whole game.”

The Chiefs were just as happy with their final touchdown drive. Seattle had closed within 35-24 with about 10 minutes left in the game on an 87-yard touchdown pass.

The Chiefs were unable to finish it off in narrow road losses earlier at Houston and Oakland. This time the Chiefs silenced the crowd at Qwest Field by going on an 80-yard drive that chewed up more than 6 minutes and ended with Cassel’s scoring pass to Moeaki.

Mere mention of the drive brought a smile to Cassel’s face after the game.

“Anytime you can go on a big drive, grind it out, go 6 minutes and then really finish the game off at that point with a touchdown … we were all pretty confident at that point we were going to (win),” Cassel said.

Haley said the last drive came at a crucial time.

“The game started to turn a little bit,” he said. “We set our mind to … taking the ball down the field and breaking their will.”

The Seahawks tried to pressure Cassel, but never could get him on the ground.

“He had a great day,” said Seattle coach Pete Carroll, Cassel’s college coach at Southern Cal. “We couldn’t rattle him on third down. We couldn’t get to him enough.”

Damn it feels good to be a gangster.. I can't believe how well the offense played today. Those first and last drives were a thing of beauty. Can't really sk for
much better from them, but I'd like to see a little more from the other wideouts (I'm sure we will when McCluster comes back). The TJ does get annoying at times but we all have to face the fact that it's necessary to keep Charles fresh and healthy. Keep o rolli, boys!
