There's that word again. "Potential."

Why do we always have to use that word when we acquire 28-year old starting QBs? Shouldn't they have already reached their potential by the time we get them?

I'll bet Drew Brees didn't go to the Saints and talk about "potential." I'll bet Peyton Manning didn't go to the Donks and say "potential."

sighs. No one knew what they were getting with Drew Brees when he signed with the Saints. The Chargers kicked him to the curb, the Dolphins didn't want him. New Orleans was his 3rd option.

Of course Alex Smith can realize his potential at this point. He wouldn't be the first to be a late bloomer now would he?

Understand the CONTEXT of what I am saying.

Rich Gannon, and Kurt Warner. No, not saying that Alex Smith can be either one of those, but, Alex has a very similar skill set to Gannon. Mobility, their plusses as qbs being short accuracy, and being very smart.

Its amazing what situation and place can do for a guys career.

that's not true. Marty wanted to keep Brees. His GM wanted to move on with the younger Rivers. You know, the same idiot GM that fired marty after he went 14-2 and replaced him with the venerable Norv Turner. Brees was a legit non-game manager qb and he was still young at the time. CANNOT be compared to Alex "My best work in 7 years is as an efficient game manager" smith

To be fair, firing Marty wasn't idiotic. He was choking away playoff games every year as usual (including the most idiotic challenge of all time during his last playoff game with the Chargers), he was insubordinate (the same reason he was fired in Washington), and he was trying to hook his family members up with jobs regardless of qualification. The time had come for a new coach.

Replacing Marty with Norv Turner was so dumb, it helped cripple the franchise for a very long time and cost AJ his job (AJ's shit drafts and cheapness played a role in that too).

And getting rid of Brees wasn't THAT idiotic. At the time, it was extremely questionable whether he'd ever play again because of his shoulder injury (brought on by, surprise surprise, Marty being stubborn). And Rivers ended up being an elite quarterback until the past couple years.

Well in all fairness, those 2 had Tom Moore/ Sean Payton to take their game to the level that maximizes their potential. Look at what Smith had his first 7 seasons. Now with that said, I'm not expecting great things from Smith but at least when he finally got 'real help' from a real QB coach in Harbs, he did improve. Now whether he can get to 'significantly improved' with Reid remains to be seen. But at least he won't be an embarrassment to the fans/org for now.
