Hypothetical: You get to take a trip.

Hypothetical situation. Maybe I've asked this in the past, but I'm bored and under stress.

You've just finished a wonderful, flavorful dinner at the Panda Express at the mall. Man, you can't beat that orange chicken, and it's fun to people-watch from the tables with the built-in plastic swiveling stools.

You lick the orange sauce from the bottom of the container, slurp the last little Aral Sea droplets of Mr. Pibb in the cup, and throw it all away. As you walk out, you savor the flavor of chicken and rice and that mysterious sauce of the east, but at the same time you'd like...you know...a fresher feeling in your mouth.

There's a gumball machine nearby, so you fish out a quarter, put it in, and hear the satisfying thunk of a big ball of apple gum hitting the metallic yet plastic thingie at the bottom of the machine. You pop the gumball in your mouth and chaw on it to get it softened up, perusing the other gumball machines as you masticate.

Hmm.

How intriguing.

One gumball machine has those little plastic ball holders in it, but they're all black so you can't see inside. The sign on the front says, "Great Prizes!" Nothing else. Just "Great Prizes!"

Well, you can't bypass this. Hoping against hope for an Olsen Twins temporary tattoo, you put your quarter in and twist. Again, that satisfying thunk, and you soon hold in your hand a very light-feeling black plastic bubble.

Inside is a sheet of paper. "Congratulations!" it says. "You have just won a trip to Europe!" It provides an 800 number to call for reservations.

You quickly read through the fine print, and discover that it's a 17-day trip, all expenses paid, but that it can only be used to visit one country. You cannot go to any other country while you're there.

What country do you visit?

Poll coming as soon as I can find a quarter.

This. Although with 17 days Australia becomes very tempting. That's a big country, I can't imagine you'd run out of things to do... Lots of cities, forays into the outback, GBR scuba, and beaches, with those DD's we keep hearing so much about.

I spent a few days in Ireland too and it was great. I definitely want to go back, but I'm not sure I would survive 17 days.

Drink and enjoy the scenery. FWIW, one would think most trips to Ireland would ideally include visits to GB or Scotland. Since this is a one country visit and you can't cross on your dime, Italy would probably be my top choice since it's 17 days. My Ireland trip will be 6 days that seems like enough to me.

If I had 17 days I would pick Italy because there would more to see, Rome, The Vatican, Florence, Venice, Tuscany, Capri, Pompei, Sicily.

Lots of folks of Irish heritage. Maybe they want to see where their ancestors came from.

I'd like to go, but it would be further down on my list.

If I were going to list my top choices based on what I know now I'd go:

1. Italy
2. France
3. Great Brittan
4. Germany
5. Spain
6. Greece
7. Belguim
8. Russia
9. Austria
10. Portugal

I'm probably leaving off somewhere really cool, but these places seem big enough and/or enough culture to warrant a 17 day trip.

Um...I'm not sure Australia's eligible since that whole Gondwanaland thing happened.

What kind of travel agent are you?

The customer wants to go to Australia. Just move it to Europe. Make it happen.

My top ten would be:

1. Finland, just because I like off-the-wall places.
2. Italy. Can't miss Italy.
3. Switzerland. I hear it's gorgeous.
4. France. I've been there, but not to the south and the Riviera.
5. Russia. Napoleon and Hitler give it two thumbs up.
6. Bulgaria. I have no idea why, but it'd be cool to go to Bulgaria. I could easily sub in Romania.
7. Netherlands. Amsterdam, mostly.
8. Lithuania. I could easily sub Estonia or Latvia. I'm curious about these places.
9. Norway. Fjords and Vikings, can't go wrong.
10. Greece. Ruins, lots of 'em.

Speaking of off-the-wall, I saw a magazine article a couple of years back about an underground hotel in Iceland where everything in it was made of ice. Right down to the beds. I'd like to see that. I don't know what else you'd do there, though. Maybe go out drinking with Bjork one night. That would be cool.
