Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Incognito agrees. So the fact that Martin's not as mentally tough, as emotionally strong, as you makes him a BETTER target for bullying than you, but it means he gets no sympathy from you, because you think he's a pussy. That makes PERFECT sense. Brilliant!

albeit in jest, about which of their teammates would “break first” in response to taunting, and notations in the fine book substantiate this. One lineman, Nate Garner, was subjected to so much derision that a joke developed that Garner, who owned several guns, might “break” by coming to the Dolphins facility and shooting everyone. On September 30, 2013, for example, Incognito wrote a text message to a former teammate in which he stated: “Nate is on the verge of killing us all.” When asked to elaborate, Incognito explained: “Since we cut [another player] we have been non stop on nate. Even turner is in on it. He looks like he’s about to cry 24/7.” In the hours after Martin left the Dolphins, Incognito recorded in the fine book a $200 penalty against himself for “breaking Jmart,” awarded Garner a $250 bonus for “not cracking first,” and wrote down the following fines for Martin:
100 pussy
100 pussy
100 pussy
100 pussy
1,000,000.00 pussy

Incognito acknowledged that the entries in question all relate to Martin’s
decision to leave the team. At first Incognito claimed that he did not know why he had been fined for “breaking Jmart,” but upon being told that the notations appeared to be in his handwriting, Incognito did not dispute that “breaking Jmart” meant causing Martin to have an emotional reaction in response to taunting.

So, Incognito's the real victim here because he's white and Jonathan Martin is a pussy for not standing up to him.

Nope, not as such. Instead Martin seemed to try to befriend Incognito.

It is more ambiguous and complicated, because, purportedly in an effort to deal with the bullying, Martin developed a curious but seemingly close friendship with Incognito, his alleged primary harasser. Yet, while there is no doubt that Martin at times enjoyed socializing with Incognito, his efforts to befriend Incognito also is consistent with the reaction of a person who is trapped in an abusive situation. As Dr. Berman explained, attempting to develop a close friendship with an abusive person is a common coping mechanism exhibited by victims of abusive relationships.

I imagine everyone told him to shut up, he just wouldn't or couldn't.

If Incognito had just kept his mouth shut and then said he was sorry, he would have had a starting job next season. Now i'm not sure teams will trust him.

Yup. I can't believe people see the report, and STILL side with Incognito chalking it up to "that's the way it is in NFL" and think it's acceptable.

Sorry, I hadn't read further down into the report. A little further review turns this up.

On occasion, by Martin’s account, he responded by saying, “**** you,” to which a teammate might respond, “I’m still going to **** your sister.” Once, upon hearing vulgar comments about his sister while waiting for an offensive unit meeting to begin, he says that he threatened “to start swinging in 30 seconds” if the comments did not stop, but his threat was not taken seriously, and the comments stopped only because coaches arrived and the meeting began. Incognito, Jerry and Pouncey said they did not recall hearing Martin issue this challenge, but another player recalled that on several occasions Martin told them to stop and threatened to start swinging.

I don't think it's acceptable, but I do think that Martin seems to have over-reacted to Icognito's stupid behavior.

I wonder if Incognito stopped teasing the trainer after being told to stop.

Sure. I mean all those great quotes about women won't turn off the owner's wife, the GM's wife, the HC's wife, the team's female fans, etc.

And I mean he's a powerhouse. Greatest guard ever. He's THE difference-maker to any NFL team.

Incognito's career is dead. He's poison. Why would any team risk the focus and derision picking him would bring?

Martin should have punched him in the mouth over the sister comments. The trouble here for me is the asst. coach. He's not Incogito's employee equal, that is a whole new area of wrong

He did overreact. But the same reason he over-reacted is what made Incognito pick him out for especially over-the-top bullying.

You think anybody tells Ray Lewis / Ndamukung Suh / etc. the stuff they were saying to Martin? Of course not. Those guys would bash your face into a sink until you had no teeth left and then start the beating. But Martin WAS a pussy, by NFL-locker room standards, and he wasn't mentally equipped to take it (obviously).

But that doesn't excuse Incognito in any way. He's obviously a turd of a human being, and deserves what he got, and to have his career end in ignominy.
