Malaysia Airlines loses contact with plane carrying 239 people

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane with 239 aboard enroute from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

The airline said in a statement early Saturday it was attempting to locate the Boeing 777 after it lost contact with Subang Air Traffic Control at 2:40 a.m. It was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m.

China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported the plane was lost in airspace controlled by Vietnam, and did not make contact with Chinese air traffic controllers.

The plane is carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members. The airline said it is working with authorities to locate the plane.

Boeing said on its Twitter account it is monitoring the situation, and "our thoughts are with everyone on board."

What are the odds that the pilot simply got lost? What would need to fail on the plane for that to happen?

What if the pilot lost his ability to navigate and then ran out of fuel while trying to find his way?

It's possible but people are claiming to have seen over Maldives. If true those red lines are suspect. I have heard multiple people say the chances that the data used to create those red lines is high.

I think in this scenario a crash on land becomes more likely. Probably could see the lights from the air, pending cloud cover, and he would be searching for an airport to land.

Just saw a story that even though we've narrowed down the southern corridor a bit, the search area is still too damned big. If we don't find the plane within the next 3 or 4 weeks, the USA at least is just going to give up on it and pull our resources out.

Ok. The U.S. believes it is off the coast of Australia but that is a pretty big area, they may never find it. I agree that the northern corridor seems highly unlikely because those countries have advanced radar that would have picked it up. Then again Thailand didn't let anyone know until today they had been tracking it.

I take it you have not traveled to a lot of 2nd or 3rd world countries?

Where is NORAD in this? Don't they monitor every object in the sky? Can they not come forward with their info because all their monitoring is classified?

If those people are underwater or in outer space, we need to reach them fast.
