The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Amazing how this draft is shaping up to look like 2009 when we passed on Sanchez.

Thank goodness we didn't whiff on a QB, instead going the "proven" route.

This past few years would have really been bad.

But the fact is your projecting how it would have worked out. You have no clue. What we do know, is that obviously the wrong choice was made in 09.

what the real Q will be is, if they don't take Geno 1.1 or any trade down to still get teh 1st QB drafted, is Alex Smith better than everyone else available this draft? I doubt that highly. So then next Q, assuming (yes I am still hopefully assuming), is short term Alex Smith + whomever we DO end up drafting whenever we end up drafting them better than Geno Smith?

Several analysts have stated that Alex Smith is better than any of the draft picks AT THIS TIME.

That 100% depends on whether Pioli would still be gone and whether we would still be stuck with Sanchez.

It really could have been worse which is hard to believe.

Daniel's deal is basically a 1-year deal.

The guy did tell me that it's not a smoke screen that they like the skillset and that they don't feel Geno is NFL ready off the bat, but they love his long term outlook.

He said the reason Reid wanted Alex is because they felt this roster was ready to win day 1 and that he wanted to give veterans on the squad (Hali, DJ, Charles) a fighting chance for success. He said they didn't feel Geno could come in this year and win with this team that he's just not ready. The morale of the team was terrible at the end of last year and they didn't want another pathetic season because they are trying to break this losing culture. That Alex Smith had a lot to do with trying to right the ship immediately.

I'm back and forth on believing that. It's odd that after watching all his game tapes, meeting him at the combine that they are just now becoming enamored with him.

Source told me that the trade for Alex Smith was agreed to before the combine. I think La Conforia reported the same thing when the trade broke but I'm not sure.

The Wednesday announcement came after the Chiefs got a chance to talk to Alex and make sure he wanted to come here.

That would at least lend to the fact that they may really like Geno. I'll say this that the 2 day visit in KC is really compelling about all of this.

If he wows them, he very well may be the pick.

I legitimately think they are undecided at this point. I think it's between 5 guys - Joeckel, Fisher, Geno, Ansah and Jordan.

I would say that the guard contracts signed lately are right on par with LT's deals. Nicks, Mankins, Levitre all got paid.

They approached him prior to the franchise tag about the possibility of shifting back to guard. They were willing to pay him pretty good coin to be the LG with the plan to have Jeff Allen shift to RT. When it was apparent they weren't close on a long term deal they franchised him to trade him.

The Chiefs, in my estimation, have zero desire to keep Albert here next year.

I'll question Reid when I see the finished product here.

Your argument is that he isn't and that the entire top of the draft is a crapshoot. I have responded to this argument by pointing out the absurdity in creating a hole in your roster in that environment. You continue to ignore that we have a left tackle already. Drafting a 'crapshoot' left tackle when you already have one is stupid - the end.

And if he's not a crapshoot left tackle, he'd damn well better be elite.

You honest to God think it's acceptable for a team to create a hole at LT and fill it with a marginal upgrade using the first overall pick in the draft?

And yes, all things being equal, when you already have a good player at LT and there is no standout talent available to you, you draft the guy that has the most potential to make you truly elite. On this team, that player is Geno Smith.

Or are you really going to try to argue that upgrading from Brandon Albert to Eric Fisher is what's going to springboard this franchise into championship contention?
