Real Talk: The Defense

So I was having a conversation with a fellow Chiefs fan the other day that has had the opportunity to watch some game film from since the San Diego game. I just wanted to get some good football opinion on what he said because it makes sense to me.

Basically Earlier in the season we were screaming that our offense was vanilla and we weren't doing many "dynamic" things. In week 11 and 12 we saw a different offense, more dynamic plays and Alex throwing down the field. There were some theories that the reason the offense was so vanilla was that we weren't trying to give up the whole playbook right away.

Starting in week 12 we saw a huge departure of the defense we had come to love in the first 11 weeks. Granted some of the departure could have been due to injuries (Hali/Houston) but what interests me the most is that my friend has said that we are not blitzing or stunting as much as we were earlier in the season. I'm wondering if we are going "vanilla" on defense so that there will be less game film on what we will really do come playoff time? I know conspiracy theory, but I think it makes sense, as long as we know we can do what we did in the Raiders game and not have another San Diego game.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game yesterday, I get it Lewis is a terrible safety I have been saying that all year too, however I think that the lack of blitzing and stunting has left our secondary even more exposed than normal.

So what do the CP experts think?

I'm sure that with our talent without Houston, that blitzing is the magic formula.

And by the way, we did blitz plenty. So stop bringing that point up.

Without Houston, our front 7 really struggles to get pressure. Period. The idea that this has anything to do with not blitzing enough is just silly.

According to espn, kc brought 3 blitzes yesterday. Remember that's 5 or more players not 4 from different positions.

They said the chiefs are now 22nd in total defense. They couldn't recall a time when a team dropped this much in one season.

But Hali, Houston, and even DJ are just gassed.
Definitely. I just hope Reid and Sutton get the hint but it doesn't seem like they give a shit. I was raging mad when Poe was still out there in a blowout against Washington.

Case went 271 Yards off of 15 Completions.

Simple Math suggests 18 Yards per completion.

18 ****ing yards per completion to a 3rd string QB.

Yup.....Writing on the wall right there.

Blitzing leaves 1 on 1 matchups with Frank Zombo, Kendrick Lewis etc.

Maybe it's just me, but that doesn't sound like a great idea.

1) the team has blitzed Berry some seventy times this season. that is 70 safety blitzes. they have blitzed using almost every other DB as well. They use DJ in overloads and middle blitzes, delayed blitzes..

2) Zombo is too slow to use in twists. Taking DJ out of the middle zone too often is going to get picked up by OC's watching tape. Berry is the 46 LB and we already discussed what he has been doing.

3) this secondary is getting exploited along the seams. Teams know these safeties in the back are crapheaded players.

4) TOP is far less than the first half of this year. ST & the deep pass game, plus Jamaal ripping off 60yd TD's all play a role in TOP.

5) Poe needs help now. He has played just about every snap. He was the dynamite in this defense when it was blowing teams up, he's lost his charge. they need to find another guy that can rotate some plays. but that is easier said than done.

off the top of my head. 2c

I'd say if we gave up 500 yards passing to any quarterback but made them punt or take FG's I would take that anyday.

I absolutely hated the way the D played against the Raiders - too many scores and absolutely no reason to let them back in the game the way we did

I think it's pretty obvious that early in the year we were playing with our hair on fire up front and that masked alot of stinky shit on the back end i.e safety play, etc.

Look at the Seahawks. Yes, they have good players in their secondary, elite ones too. But they are absolutely loaded in the front 7.

That is the risk/reward for blitzing and not getting there though

I'll take it as long as the end result isn't a TD

We're giving up alot of big plays. The press man stuff needs to be backed off of a little bit, IMO.

If you give up 500 yards to a Qb, the odds are good that they've scored a lot of points and aren't punting.

Not every Qb is gonna be turnover prone like Matt McGloin.
