Not a "he sucks because he went to KU" logic....actual reasons that you think it was a shitty or good hire.
pros:

He won a bunch of Super Bowls with the New England Patriots.

He went to two BCS games while recruiting and developing an elite college QB while at Notre Dame.

He engineered a terrible quarterback to some pretty amazing stats and a playoff berth with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He improved the statistics for the qb at Florida this past year.

cons:

Overall Florida offensively sucks this year but that may be more of an issue with the talent at that school than the playcalling.

He jumps around a lot from job to job.

It's a good hire. Plain and simple.

Agree w/ Wickedsons for the most part except the Florida thing, who cares

Once he started getting his own talent at Notre Dame, they started to suck
He has had 4 jobs in 4 years
His wife and daughter are staying in Florida

The Notre Dame thing makes me assume that he can recruit, but the coaching is the issue. I believe all of his ND classes were top 15, but obviously it didn't translate to the field. So, if coaching is the issue, he's going to struggle because he won't be able to get top 15 classes at KU.

I see the KU job as a stepping stone for him to prove he can be a successful college coach. If he can be successful, I don't see him at KU more than 4-5 years before moving on to a better job. So while not a good thing that he's had that many positions in such a short time, it won't be unexpected to me if he decides to bolt in 4-5 years.....but that would mean that he's turned KU around to being at least a decent football program.

Which would be a huge ****ing WIN after the last year of Mangino and the tremendous fail in the way KU handled it coupled with Gill.

At this point I'm not expecting much. But I haven't expected much since they fired Mangino.

I'm more in the camp of "no one can win at Notre Dame" (at least like they did in the old days) but that's just my opinion.

Exactly my thought. If he comes in and gets KU headed in the right direction and then leaves for a better program....it's a win for KU.

Weis has openly admitted his failures at Notre Dame. And there were a multitude of them.

1) His biggest failure was that he spent too much time on the "system" and teaching the complexities of the offense and schemes. He realized way too late into it that at the College level he didn't have the refined or polished players to do this like at the Pro level where most the players are already a refined product. He did not concentrate on the fundementals of football, the first 2 years he got away with it because the players already there had a lot of fundamentals instilled in them. As those players left (graduated out) he kept with the hardcore scheming and the "finished product" players were gone. The guys that came in didn't have enough football teachings in their background and it showed on the field. The other part of this was they didn't do as much hitting and did more walk-throughs than the typical college program will do. The players suffered because they were not completely prepared for the game speed and hard hitting.

2) He did not have a good Strength and Conditioning program at Notre Dame.

3) He had a large amount of Offensive and Defensive Linemen (particularly defensive) that transfered out during the transition... and he brought in a few guys but did not recruit enough overall. He didn't have the big guys to support the level of play they needed. He was good at the skill positions, but the big uglies were severely lacking in overall talent and depth. Once the few remaining hold overs graduated from the previous regime, he was stuck in a bad situation and the defensive play showed it.

These are all items that supposedly were part of Weis' case as to why he failed the last couple of years at ND during the interview process.

If he's as smart as I hope he is, then I think that his previous failures will definitely help him this time around. There's my sunshine pumping for the day.

Notre Dame recruits itself, for the most part.

I don't trumpet the "HE COULDN'T WIN AT NOTRE DAME!!111" argument. Not many people have been that successful there the past 20 years.

However, he took them to levels of suck that they aren't usually accustomed to.

He had a lot of the same personality issues at ND that Mangino had at KU. Further, the reason a lot of his 'own talent' sucked at ND was that recruits were evidently turned off by a great deal of his 'look at me' schtick.

His track record as an offensive coordinator at NE isn't actually all that great. During his 5 years in NE, his offenses were in the bottom half of the league 4 times (with Tom Brady at QB?!?!?!). Their offensive efficiency skyrocketed after he left.

I think it's incredibly fair to ask what, precisely, has he done well? His brief tenure at Florida was bad. His time in KC was decent, but not spectacular. His NE period actually looks pretty lame in comparison to his successors. And his time at ND, on balance, is an unqualified disaster.

Call it a 'meh' hiring if you want to, but there are a ton of things on his resume that would make me take pause. Especially when you're asking him to operate as the CEO of a BCS level team. There are significant reasons to believe that his 'strengths' are a little overrated. Worse still, those strengths are a little underutilized as a HC at the college level. Combine that with the fact that his weaknesses are even more emphasized as a HC and you really have to dig deep to find the upside here, IMO.

True. But I'm not expecting him to come in with top 20 rated classes - as long as he seems to be improving the quality of players on the team, which shouldn't be that hard, I'll be happy.
