A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

8-8 is worse than 2-14 in today's NFL.

At least 2-14 will get you a lottery ticket for a franchise quarterback.

8-8 won't get you the playoffs or a good draft pick.

No, and this isn't what anyone wants to hear, but it builds for the next year.

We've been the worst franchise the last 6 years, in the NFL. We need to get respectable as fast as possible, which IMO, is why we went the way we did this offseason.

We actually balanced it fairly well, in winning now, and building for the future.

I keep seeing you and your ilk post this nonsense. How does 8-8 "build for the future"? How does that help you? Smith will never be good enough to win it all, yet, 8-8 convinces the FO that they've done the right thing by bringing him in. So, again, how does 8-8 "help build the franchise"?

Teams don't go from the 1st pick in the draft, to the Superbowl very fast.

Yeah, we were probably better than we showed last year. But shit, we were bad. It will take a couple times before we knock the door down, if we do. Look at the 9ers. They won a playoff game, then won 2, now are favored.

It's going to take some experience.

2/3 of the playoff QB's last year were not top 15 picks...including the 2 in the SB.

A franchise that has won 29 games in 6 years shouldn't be looking for quick fixes. They should be looking long term. Instead, they are more worried about getting people to Arrowhead.

Well, I see it the other way, in that a franchise thats been of that caliber for 6 years pretty much has to win some games now fast, or it's gonna get really bad.
