Male Ghostbusters Reboot Confirmed By Script Writer

Andrew Steinbeiser
- 07/29/2015

Denials toward the all-male Ghostbusters film, which exists in the same universe as Paul Feig’s female Ghostbusters have, well, been busted.

Screenwriter Drew Pearce has confirmed that a new, all-male Ghostbusters film is indeed in the works, and that he has completed the screenplay for it. Shedding details during the red carpet premiere of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (which he also wrote), Pearce revealed that he and the Russo brothers have a bold plan for a shared Ghostbusters universe.

“I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks,” he said. “Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did ’Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and are doing ’Civil War’ at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it,” he told MTV. “Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!”

While Pearce couldn’t confirm if Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum would star in the film, as original rumors claimed, he did confirm that he wrote the screenplay with those actors in mind.

“That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project,” Pearce confirmed, but added, “Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.”

Regardless of the actor wield give love to Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, but the original series as well.

“My personal inclination is to try and make everything occur in the same ’Ghostbusters’ universe, because I feel, as a fan, that’s what I would want,” he said. “Standing here in New York, you just wanna tie it all together. Whether that happens or not we’ll see, but I’ve certainly given them the tools to do that, I hope.”

Are you glad to hear that a male Ghostbusters reboot is happening? Do you want Pratt and Tatum in the roles? Let us know in the comments!

Paul Feig's Ghostbusters hits theaters on July 22, 2016. And to see what other big films are hitting next summer, head to ComicBook.com's Franchise Movie Database!

I just think this is an awful idea. I've heard they've created an entire Ghostbusters universe to rival Star Wars and Marvel, complete with future movies, comics and TV.

Personally, I don't get it.

What made the original Ghostbusters great was the actors. The script was just a vehicle for Murray, Ackroyd and Ramis to get together and have fun, just like Stripes and Caddyshack. II didn't work for me and with the passing of Harold Ramis, a third film wouldn't work for the audience, either.

I understand the reverence that guys like Judd and Paul Fieg have for a property like Ghostbusters but I'm extremely skeptical that it will work in any incarnation, male, female, or animated.

It sure was a bummer when she was paralyzed in that karate match and Arnold had to euthanize her. Kind of ruined any hope of a sequel really.

The only way I see it working is to CGI the **** out of it, and try to make it a Transformers type franchise. To do that, you need guys and kids, so in this aspect, the female cast doesn't jive.

From now on, all TV shows will be based on old shows and movies will be remakes.

Existing properties are rebooted because there's a built-in audience. Original ideas like Tomorrow Land oftenfail to find an audience, even with $125+ million budgets, so it's prudent for studios to producers "winners" rather than "losers".

You can find plenty of enjoyable movies in the $10-$40 million dollar range. All you need to do is look for them.
