Star Trek: Beyond
Paramount just released the trailer to Star Trek Beyond. I am less than pleased overall.



Justin Lin, the director of the last 3 F&F movies, is at the helm of this bullshit and from the tiny snippet of Simon Pegg jumping out of a pod and hanging off the side of a cliff... it looks equally as campy as F&F.

Justin Lin, the director of nothing but remakes and sequels, is also the guy in charge of the reshooting (because there won't be anything new about it) of the Highlander movie.

I love Trek but this new movie series has been largely garbage. Little to no rewatchability at all for either movie. For the first time ever... I am more excited for something Star Wars related than Trek.

Uhh, not quite. The Klingon war is only broached in historical context in Star Trek so far. Their is no "re-doing" of anything, unlike the lazy shitball writing that made a joke if Khan.

This does not look or feel like Star Trek.

It seems like a completely different universe and I'm even less interested in this film than I was with the last film (which I found unwatchable).

Not just TOS. It's different from all previous Star Trek properties. All 3 reboot films are. And no, different does not make it bad. It also does not make it good. A cheeseburger cut into tiny pieces and served with chopsticks may be good or bad. It's not the sushi we were looking for though.

It's different enough that IMO, it shouldn't be titled Star Trek. Generations, while a poor film IMO, still had the look and feel of Star Trek.

The last film barely broke even in cost versus box office receipts.

I'll be surprised if this film is a winner.

And that's fine - everyone has an opinion. I'm just surprised it's so negatively concentrated here when the review sites out there (Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb, Metacritic) show that people enjoyed both of them pretty well, and most people I talk to seem to think they were pretty solid flicks.

I loved the reboot. I believe it was JJ's best work, as he was able to balance his love for propulsive action and narrative twists with an original story that mostly honored the source material. Five months out, I still believe Trek surpasses his rehash of ANH.

Into Darkness was a derivative bore.

Same here. I liked the first two just fine, thought they were pretty good. It looks like they at least have come up with a new story line unlike the latest Star Wars. About all that was was a rewrite of the first one. I walked away from that thinking "all this time, all that money, all the hype and all they did was rewrite the first movie".

Isn't that exactly what they did with Into Darkness? Just a re-write of Wrath of Khan. That was a big reason I really disliked the second movie. It wasn't a movie as much as it was a 2 hour long episode of ST that did nothing to move along the greater story.

The 1st one was genuinely a very good movie, but I enjoyed both of them well enough. I'm fine with seeing another with this cast.
