Speaking of Sopranos, did anyone else catch that 'John Stone' was arguing with his real life sister outside the clinic?

And a bit of irony, the pharmacist played by Fisher Stevens. Notable for being a white dude playing a Pakistani in Short Circuit.

Most proud of though, was catching that the mysterious argumentative guy at the funeral was Paulo Constanzo from Royal Pains, in a momentary long shot. Confirmed by the end credits

Probably more along the lines of before I bailed on The Leftovers when I started reading about how the show wasn't about what happened, but their lives afterwards.

It's very moving because it gives a solid, almost irrefutable, sense that in some form or another 'The Gospel' has a kernel of truth, but doesn't answer questions that remain [leftover] with that knowledge.

A third of the world's population disappears in an instant, and the world just chugs along. And the show takes it seriously as a concept. Imagine 1/3 of your family disappearing in an instant, and 1/3 of the family next door, and so on, and so on. How do you deal with grief? With faith? With random fate?

THAT is what the show is about, taking faith to the next level where it's not blind, but it's still not clear-eyed, and it's clouded with impotent rage and new questions and grief.

We are in a golden age of TV, and if I had to choose an experience I'd least like to lose The Leftovers would be high on the list. Game of Thrones or Fargo or Better Call Saul, might be tighter plotlines, but as a meditation on life, the show just sticks to your soul. It inhabits your worldview.

I can't recommend it enough, and am frankly jealous you have an opportunity to watch it afresh, possibly in a binge.

I'm behind on it, but I think binging is a mistake. It gives you no time to reflect on what happened. JMO.

I'm definitely not knocking The Leftovers, I could see it's brilliance from the few episodes I did watch. I agree that the aftermath is more compelling than the actual event in that scenario and maybe it was a poor example on my part, which is why I refrained from naming comparable shows in my initial post on the subject. I'd like to hope that I'll come back to The Leftovers at some point, but for what entertains me at this point in my life, it's a bad fit. And that's a definite it's me not you type of sentiment.

I used it here simply because of the thoughtfulness in the way The Night Of is being filmed. With the tension they built showing what it would be like sitting in a squad car at a murder scene you were at. What it's like to be processed and questioned by the police. The lead up shots of the jail, capturing the true desolation of the place. All that leads me to believe they're after more than a who done it. Which is great if you're throwing enough bones along the way that lead to a logical explanation of what happened. I think that is happening, with some of the memory flashbacks and the lawyer digging and capturing the moment at the funeral, etc.

The father in-law and the guy being chased away from the wedding are kind of hard to rule out of the equation. So, basically I'm just pissing in the wind on what I think may have happened while enjoying the show.

IMO the killer(s) got in through the unlocked back door. Remember when Stone visited the place a few days after the murder and let the cat back in? That door was unlocked.

It 'might' be the guy who stopped and was staring at Naz when he and the girl were walking up the steps into her place. She was obviously a wild child and I think her past plays into it. Maybe that dude partied at her place a time or two. Maybe he even fooled around with her and she got on his bad side- either emotionally or more likely due to a financial transaction gone bad.

Naz is a lightweight and after a few shots of tequila with some of the other shit she gave him, it put him down shortly after he nutted. The bad guys come back and pay her a visit, and it gets violent. She gets dead. After Naz wakes up, freaks out and decides to bolt after seeing her cut up body, where does he find the supposed murder weapon? Downstairs on the coffee table next to the tequila bottle and lime. The same place they left it after he jabbed her in the hand playing around. You stab someone 22 times, that knife is going to be bloody and so are you- at least your hands and some of your clothes. That knife had some blood on it- but not that much. Naz wasn't bloody when he woke up. Unless Naz brought a Patrick Bateman murder kit with him, he'd be bloody. He had scratches on his back at the Police station, but those were IMO love scratches.

Have they discussed autopsy results yet? Pretty important. Does the knife found on Naz conclusively match the cuts and wounds on her body? Was there any other DNA or physical evidence (fibers/hairs) besides Naz's found on her? How about an analysis of his clothes? Was her blood on him? His underwear? ...Twenty-two stab wounds and the sheets were covered in blood. He woke up at the kitchen table bone dry.

You may be on to something about Naz being set up. I thought maybe Freddie (the boxer) and the real killer were linked/communicating ("erase this guy because I fukt up and some physical evidence might lead to the cops to me...") But then why toy with Naz? Why not just arrange his death?...So I think that Freddie just might in some unintended way help Naz understand something about his situation. Naz will remember to tell Stone that there were two dudes he bumped into outside her place that night on the street. "Two? Who is the second guy?"

I wouldn't be surprised if Stone uncovers some evidence compelling enough to get Box to buy-in or at least show reasonable doubt.

A lot of clues in the opening credits...I'm rambling. Three espresso shots.
