TODD HALEY: “Spirited practice today. Let the team know this morning that we had 19 days until we kicked off at Baltimore. Things are picking up a little bit which I think is good. Time is going to move fast for all of us and there are a lot of decisions and practices that have to occur here with high efficiency.”

Q: Given that 19 day mark are you where you thought you’d be?

HALEY: “I’ve said all along I’ve been encouraged with the work and the progress we’ve made. I felt like we were a little better today than we were yesterday, so that’s really what we’re shooting for. We have another game this weekend which will be another excellent test for us. So, I would say I’m encouraged with where we’re at. I can’t say happy, but encouraged.”

Q: You’ve got a couple of new offensive linemen in. Realistically how long does it take to work guys in like that?

HALEY: “I would expect these guys to integrate in fairly quickly. The program’s not going to be a lot different (than Miami). I know a lot of those people down there, lot of those coaches. I know the way the practices go and they’ll get that pretty quick. System-wise, terminology is a little different but still a lot of the same thought process. I worked with Coach (Dan) Henning for four years, so we think a lot of the same way. Again, some of the terminology will be a little different but these are both smart guys that I think should have a chance to pick it up fairly quickly.”

Q: Do you think they can play against Seattle?

HALEY: “I would think that’s the goal. We will definitely try to get them in there.”

Q: You had one of those guys working at right tackle and one working at right guard today. Is that where they’ll…?

HALEY: “I think that’s where we’ll start. That was the plan when we had an opportunity to get these days. We were excited about the chance to get them on our team and for those positions specifically. They will do just what we talked about yesterday: they will bring competition to the right tackle and right guard spots.”

Q: Do you expect them to compete for a starting position or are they just for depth?

HALEY: “I would expect them to fully compete for all those open spots.”

Q: Do you have the talent to be a good offensive line?

HALEY: “I think I’ve seen enough from these guys at different times to think we have a chance. I like our leadership a lot. I think Brian Waters has tremendous leadership skills as does Mike Goff in two different ways. I think when you have a couple of guys like that and you see them run after practice on their own that’s a good sign.

“I think we have a chance to be a physical line. I know we’re going to be well-coached. So again, if we can continue to bring in competition and get better when we get a chance – like I feel we did with these two players – I think we’ve got a chance to be a good offensive line.”

Q: After what we heard at OTA’s from Brian Waters there appeared to be some friction. Do you feel like he’s completely bought into everything that is going on here?

HALEY: “None of my personal stuff with these guys will ever be talked about by me. Again, this is a player who has come in and done above and beyond what’s been asked of him every day. He obviously can play; he’s shown that. He’s got himself in very good condition which I think he’s seeing as an advantage. The guy is doing what is asked of him and he can do it well enough, which it looks like he’s got a chance, and if he continues to work he’ll be a part of this team.”

Q: Does this surprise you at all? Was it what you thought you’d get from him?

HALEY: “I just try to coach the way that I’ve always had and try not to speculate too much or worry a lot about what’s being talked about and go by what I see. That’s worked for me as a coach and that’s what I continue to do and not get caught up too much in the peripheral stuff. Again, if they’re doing what they’re supposed to do and they’re good enough then they’ll be players for me.”

Q: Do you have buy-in? Are you still having to get on guys to have them do it your way?

HALEY: “Well, I think every day is a challenge. I think that’s just the nature of the beast especially when you get four weeks into camp and it gets a little hotter as it did today or they’re sore like they were yesterday morning. That’s coaching. If you leave it all up to them you’re probably not going to get the results you want generally.

“I believe players want to be coached. They may say they don’t like a child may not want discipline, but I think they want to be coached, they want to be pushed hard to be the best they can be. They like to complain about it most of the time but I think they generally desire it.”

Q: You’ve had OTAs and mini-camps and now training camp. Do you feel like you know this team very well now?

HALEY: “A lot further along, a lot further along. It’s night and day because I would look at the board in the spring and really they were just names. With my philosophy of going by what I see it wouldn’t have done much for me to form a lot of opinions too early on a lot of these guys. I feel like I’m a lot further along than I was. I’m grateful that we have a couple of games left and 18 more practices of some sort to get ready, but at that point, I hope I’ll have a better feel than I do now.”

Q: Has Dwayne Bowe responded the way you would like now that he appears to be running on the first team?

HALEY: “I think that’s pretty obvious for all of you who have been out here and who have seen a progression from Dwayne that’s encouraging. From the early days of camp to where he’s at now I think he has made very good progress.

“Is he there? No. Do we need to make more plays? Yes. But again, that’s what coaching is all about: trying to push the right buttons all the time with a lot of different guys. I would say that Dwayne has made progress in the last couple of weeks more specifically. For a while there it was treading water but now I feel the arrow is going in the right direction.”

Q: Is he back to being the number one guy?

HALEY: “We haven’t talked about that yet, how we’ll go into this game. Again, he’s got a shot at it.”

Q: Who else has stepped up at wide receiver?

HALEY: “I think the group as a whole has made some progress. I think you’ve seen Amani get a little more acclimated to the system. Bobby Engram, I think, the closer we get to the season he’s an older veteran that I’ve got to worry about him conserving too much. I kind of got on him this week that I wanted to see what he had, see what we were going to get from him this week. I think he stepped up.

“But as a whole I think the group has made some progress. I felt we were banging our heads against the wall early on and I don’t feel there’s as much banging on now. And, they’ve worked. You see them after practice working every day and that’s how you do it. There is no magic potion that does it other than working hard and getting better.”

Q: Today you were down there with the receivers and quarterbacks quite a bit. Is that just your background or an area of the team you want to see what’s going on?

HALEY: “Each day I probably write something down that I want to make sure I get done or stress or work on. Today, it was that area. But I’m feeling more comfortable across the board with all positions, some positions that I haven’t had a lot of experience with. Even if it’s just from an offensive vantage point, giving them some insight at times I will do it. Today we were working on a new concept and I wanted to make sure everybody was clear on it.”

Q: When you tell the players they have 19 days, they probably are excited. But are you nervous there are only 19 days left?

HALEY: “I wish there was more but they’re not going to cancel the season.”

Q: What about kick returning right now? Any closer to a candidate?

HALEY: “Still hunting. I was encouraged by Jamaal Charles. Again, it’s such a hard play to get a good one at times. There are so many factors involved. I would say the way Charles took it up there was encouraging to me. The returner we have back there will not be a finesse guy; he will be a take-it-up-the-field-hit-the-hole guy. And, the way things have changed on kickoff return with the wedge-part of the game is going to change a little bit. It’s an area I’m looking forward to watching and seeing how it plays out.”

Q: Do you see it as a tougher job because of the rule changes?

HALEY: “I don’t know that. There may be more long kick returns. I’m just saying it’s going to be interesting because this is the first time through for everybody. Some of these teams who haven’t used the wedge are probably going to have a better advantage or coaches who have used the four-man wedge.”

Q: Does that put more focus on the wedge guys now, the tight ends, linebackers…

HALEY: “Little more mobile. You’ll see more wide receivers on the cover team or those types of bodies. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out but I think it’s going to be an interesting thing to watch.”

Q: A couple of the players said this morning that the group dynamic was such that the conditioning drills of the spring have sort of helped everybody come together. Is that what you would have hoped for?

HALEY: “I think that hard work generally does that. That’s why the off-season is so important to me. What I’ve learned is that’s when you start to build the foundation of your team. Without that, it’s just a little tougher and the old days when they didn’t have an off-season you had seven weeks of training camp and that was the time. Now, it’s a little different set-up but I think it’s all part of it.

“Another part of it is when you add a player or two players late and they end up being on your team; it’s how they work into the fabric of your team. There is not a manual for how to do it. You try to go with what you know works. That’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Q: People will look at this third game as the most important of the pre-season because of the first cuts. But to you is this just another step or a key pre-season game?

HALEY: “This will be more important than the last two because it’s the next one. We’ll see a lot of guys play more and you’ll have to see them where they have a halftime where they have to get themselves going again, from where they were shut down (prior pre-season games). Those will all be very important. This one is the most important to you right now.

“Every day is an evaluation and if you can’t get yourself in good standing to get into the game then the game means nothing because some decision may already been made. I think every day is extremely important for all these guys and for us.”

Chiefs Inside Source: Marshall And Bowe In Similar Circumstances

Right now, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is in the midst of showing his top wide receiver Dwayne Bowe who is boss, while Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is doing the same with Brandon Marshall.

“It’s the same argument with Haley and Bowe as it is with McDaniels and Marshall. It is a power struggle where both coaches are saying I’m not giving into you because I don’t have to, and you’ll be a better player for it. Both coaches are reading from the same speech it seems,” said a well-placed source within the Chiefs organization Monday.

On the Broncos side, Marshall is a newly-minted Pro Bowler with two 1,200 plus yard seasons to his resume. However, he was listed as a second string player on the release of the Broncos’ first depth chart, and was practicing with the scout team coming into Tuesday’s workout.

On the Chiefs side, Bowe is the team’s 2007 first rounder who led all rookie receivers his first season in all main categories, and who practically has two 1,000 yard seasons as the team's best wide receiver as well (Bowe 995 receiving yards in '07). Ironically though Bowe was listed as a third team player on the Chiefs first depth chart, and still was coming into Tuesday’s workout.

Now, even though Marshall recently told Michael Irvin on his radio show that he thinks McDaniels is a good coach, in my opinion he doesn't hold the man at the helm in that high of esteem. These days Marshall is ever mindful of what he says on the record with his money more at stake.

Despite the fact sources still say Marshall is remaining “cool” about not traveling to Seattle for the team's second preseason game, I believe the fact Marshall was made to watch the game back in Denver is further evidence of friction between the two.

As for Bowe’s current relationship with Haley after being benched in their first preseason game against the Houston Texans, and then playing with the first team offense against the Vikings?

“I would say there is definitely some lingering animosity between the two (despite Bowe’s current improving situation.) (Bowe’s) emotion is what it is. But the bottom line is, just like in Denver there is a big push to make sure people have new attitudes, and D-Bo is a part of that residue,” the Chiefs insider continued.

In reaction to the upheaval with Bowe’s benching, a lot of reports are surfacing that speculate Bowe is on the block, while Marshall trade talks continues as well.

So what's the likelihood either player will depart in the eyes of this Chiefs insider?

“In Bowe’s case I’d say zero. He is not going anywhere right now.”

This source’s answer is not from someone in the organization directly declaring that within their earshot; it comes from their analysis of the team’s current situation.

“Nobody specifically has said (Bowe wont get traded) for sure, but I just think where we are at receiver, it would be stupid.”

As for Brandon Marshall?

“I’d say for Marshall, 30 percent chance they move him. That is only because the Broncos have proven they would move a player of significant caliber for more of an unknown. I don’t want to bash (Kyle) Orton because I do believe he is a capable quarterback, I just don’t know that he is the franchise guy I want running my operation. The Broncos had an elite quarterback in Jay Cutler, and you moved him for a non-elite quarterback. That makes absolutely no sense to me.”

“As for as the Chiefs right now, we are not going to send Dwayne Bowe for a second or third (round) pick, for some mythical unknown in the future when right now our team needs help.”

But wait a minute, didn’t the Chiefs do exactly that with tight end Tony Gonzalez back in April after sending their Pro Bowl wide receiver to Atlanta for a second-rounder?

“When we got the pick for Tony we were going into the offseason. We were going into making selections and changing our roster. Now we are at a different point in the season. If we were going to chalk this year up, maybe a trade makes sense, but I just don’t see us throwing in the towel at this juncture. There has to be some improvement with the changes we’ve already made.”

Even as Haley admits now Bowe’s attitude and performance shows improvement, the question is, can the two truly co-exist?

“There is no secret that Haley is just a gruff personality. You saw it in Dallas with Terrell Owens, where everybody blamed it all on T.O. and they shouldn’t have. Then in Arizona (Haley) didn’t just have blow-ups with (Anquan) Boldin, he had them with Larry (Fitzgerald) too.

“No doubt Haley is volatile, and if you argue with everybody everywhere you have to look yourself in the mirror at some point. However, from my vantage point they can continue to be together right now. This is also because it has not impacted Bowe’s by carrying on into the regular season yet. That’s when people start to say, 'You can kiss my you-know-what.'”

In Marshall’s case, he has missed both Broncos preseason games. But regardless of how much missing both playing opportunities has to do with injury or ego from either player or coach, there are some that feel on both the inside and on the periphery that Marshall’s move is not to fret now.

“Just like with Bowe, in my opinion right now Marshall’s money is not being impacted. If this continues into the regular season, then you have a gripe.”

Moreover, after considering the instant turnaround in the active practice status of cornerback Champ Bailey, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, and safety Renaldo Hill one day after failing McDaniels’ conditioning test the first day of full-squad training camp, and Broncos owner Pat Bowlen’s obvious final say during situations that call for discipline, the Chiefs insider source opined this:

“To me, Marshall looks to have the owner in his back pocket, especially with the way Kyle Orton is playing. When it comes to being in the midst of actually winning and losing in the regular season, Marshall can pee on Josh’s desk and Bowlen isn’t going to say anything. Sooner or later, like what seemingly happened with Bailey and those guys, Bowlen might tell McDaniels to shut up.”

Even though Orton responded to his dismal three-interception debut with a more confident performance last Saturday, leverage has not been lessened in Orton’s tenuous situation as the leader of the Broncos offense.

“Wait to you get closer to Week One. I wouldn’t be surprised if (Bowlen) comes downstairs and says, 'Brandon, still not working with ones, young man? (Clear throat) I said, Brandon, still not working with the ones? We need to figure out a package for him, don’t we?’ Sometimes it can just be that simple.”

The depth chart that the Broncos released on August 22 (the same day as the Seattle game) now has Marshall listed with the first string. Bowlen’s influence in that matter is anyone’s guess; however, to suggest that Bowlen has never questioned his new coach is probably not smart.

“How come nobody is saying in Denver how much (general manager) Brian Xanders and boy genius McDaniels could turn out to be a disaster? I'm saying that and I have nothing against Xanders or McDaniels. Those two could lose their jobs playing fantasy football up there. There is no salary cap hit for firing a coach. I just think with the NFC East in the schedule, on top of the other ridiculous match-ups, there is not much relief in sight.”

Do McDaniels and the Broncos have leverage with the fact that his Patriots offensive system is proven, and, that it doesn’t require Orton to have a Cutler-like arm on every play? I asked that question when I saw how overt McDaniels was in establishing former Patriot Jabar Gaffney in the short crossing-route game against the Seahawks last Saturday.

“When the Kentucky Derby starts, and they blow the horn, you better be sitting on a good horse. You can run out there with Mr. Ed if you want to, and have everyone laughing. Don’t get me wrong, Gaffney is all right, but he was one of the pit crew in New England; he wasn’t driving the race car.”

With that emphatic statement, the well-placed Chiefs insider says the Broncos need to just give Marshall his money now because it could be more economic in the end after all.

“Just extend the man and get it over with. You can always trade him later. You may stand to save more money with the small amount of good faith that you have left right now. What if the Collective Bargaining Agreement gets resolved, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent? Now you have no good faith after messing with him during the regular season, and then you lose all good faith. Now Marshall is on a plane to Washington, or to the bank with Jerry Jones, and Bowlen is ready to kill everybody in the building because you opened Pandora’s box en route to a bidding war. Not that he would do that, but I am just saying.”

Yet ironically, even if Marshall became available to Kansas City, this member of the Chiefs organization would actually rather stick with Bowe.

“Marshall is nice - matter of fact, in a lot of respects he’s better then Dwayne, but here is where I draw the line: where there is some smoke, there is fire. His case may have been adjudicated and you won your court proceedings, but I also know Bowe, and I truly believe his heart is in the right place. Is (Bowe’s) work ethic where the coaching staff would like it to be completely? No. I just know that Bowe means well. I don’t know that about Brandon. He’s physically more gifted than D-Bo, but sorry to say, I will settle for the one I have right now.”

Yes. Right now.

There is no magic potion that does it other than working hard and getting better.” Q: Today you were down there with the receivers and quarterbacks quite a bit. Is that just your background or an area of the team you want to see what’s going on? HALEY: “Each day I probably write something down that I want to make sure I get done or stress or work on. Today, it was that area. But I’m feeling more comfortable across the board with all positions, some positions that I haven’t had a lot of experience with. Even if it’s just from an offensive vantage point, giving them some insight at times I will do it. Today we were working on a new concept and I wanted to make sure everybody was clear on it.” Q: When you tell the players they have 19 days, they probably are excited. But are you nervous there are only 19 days left? HALEY: “I wish there was more but they’re not going to cancel the season.” Q: What about kick returning right now? Any closer to a candidate? HALEY: “Still hunting. I was encouraged by Jamaal Charles. Again, it’s such a hard play to get a good one at times. There are so many factors involved. I would say the way Charles took it up there was encouraging to me. The returner we have back there will not be a finesse guy; he will be a take-it-up-the-field-hit-the-hole guy. And, the way things have changed on kickoff return with the wedge-part of the game is going to change a little bit. It’s an area I’m looking forward to watching and seeing how it plays out.” Q: Do you see it as a tougher job because of the rule changes? HALEY: “I don’t know that. There may be more long kick returns. I’m just saying it’s going to be interesting because this is the first time through for everybody. Some of these teams who haven’t used the wedge are probably going to have a better advantage or coaches who have used the four-man wedge.” Q: Does that put more focus on the wedge guys now, the tight ends, linebackers… HALEY: “Little more mobile. You’ll see more wide receivers on the cover team or those types of bodies. I don’t know how it’s going to turn out but I think it’s going to be an interesting thing to watch.” Q: A couple of the players said this morning that the group dynamic was such that the conditioning drills of the spring have sort of helped everybody come together. Is that what you would have hoped for? HALEY: “I think that hard work generally does that. That’s why the off-season is so important to me. What I’ve learned is that’s when you start to build the foundation of your team. Without that, it’s just a little tougher and the old days when they didn’t have an off-season you had seven weeks of training camp and that was the time. Now, it’s a little different set-up but I think it’s all part of it. “Another part of it is when you add a player or two players late and they end up being on your team; it’s how they work into the fabric of your team. There is not a manual for how to do it. You try to go with what you know works. That’s what I’ve tried to do.” Q: People will look at this third game as the most important of the pre-season because of the first cuts. But to you is this just another step or a key pre-season game? HALEY: “This will be more important than the last two because it’s the next one. We’ll see a lot of guys play more and you’ll have to see them where they have a halftime where they have to get themselves going again, from where they were shut down (prior pre-season games). Those will all be very important. This one is the most important to you right now. “Every day is an evaluation and if you can’t get yourself in good standing to get into the game then the game means nothing because some decision may already been made. I think every day is extremely important for all these guys and for us.”

It is a power struggle where both coaches are saying I’m not giving into you because I don’t have to, and you’ll be a better player for it. Both coaches are reading from the same speech it seems,” said a well-placed source within the Chiefs organization Monday. On the Broncos side, Marshall is a newly-minted Pro Bowler with two 1,200 plus yard seasons to his resume. However, he was listed as a second string player on the release of the Broncos’ first depth chart, and was practicing with the scout team coming into Tuesday’s workout. On the Chiefs side, Bowe is the team’s 2007 first rounder who led all rookie receivers his first season in all main categories, and who practically has two 1,000 yard seasons as the team's best wide receiver as well (Bowe 995 receiving yards in '07). Ironically though Bowe was listed as a third team player on the Chiefs first depth chart, and still was coming into Tuesday’s workout. Now, even though Marshall recently told Michael Irvin on his radio show that he thinks McDaniels is a good coach, in my opinion he doesn't hold the man at the helm in that high of esteem. These days Marshall is ever mindful of what he says on the record with his money more at stake. Despite the fact sources still say Marshall is remaining “cool” about not traveling to Seattle for the team's second preseason game, I believe the fact Marshall was made to watch the game back in Denver is further evidence of friction between the two. As for Bowe’s current relationship with Haley after being benched in their first preseason game against the Houston Texans, and then playing with the first team offense against the Vikings? “I would say there is definitely some lingering animosity between the two (despite Bowe’s current improving situation.) (Bowe’s) emotion is what it is. But the bottom line is, just like in Denver there is a big push to make sure people have new attitudes, and D-Bo is a part of that residue,” the Chiefs insider continued. In reaction to the upheaval with Bowe’s benching, a lot of reports are surfacing that speculate Bowe is on the block, while Marshall trade talks continues as well. So what's the likelihood either player will depart in the eyes of this Chiefs insider? “In Bowe’s case I’d say zero. He is not going anywhere right now.” This source’s answer is not from someone in the organization directly declaring that within their earshot; it comes from their analysis of the team’s current situation. “Nobody specifically has said (Bowe wont get traded) for sure, but I just think where we are at receiver, it would be stupid.” As for Brandon Marshall? “I’d say for Marshall, 30 percent chance they move him. That is only because the Broncos have proven they would move a player of significant caliber for more of an unknown. I don’t want to bash (Kyle) Orton because I do believe he is a capable quarterback, I just don’t know that he is the franchise guy I want running my operation. The Broncos had an elite quarterback in Jay Cutler, and you moved him for a non-elite quarterback. That makes absolutely no sense to me.” “As for as the Chiefs right now, we are not going to send Dwayne Bowe for a second or third (round) pick, for some mythical unknown in the future when right now our team needs help.” But wait a minute, didn’t the Chiefs do exactly that with tight end Tony Gonzalez back in April after sending their Pro Bowl wide receiver to Atlanta for a second-rounder? “When we got the pick for Tony we were going into the offseason. We were going into making selections and changing our roster. Now we are at a different point in the season. If we were going to chalk this year up, maybe a trade makes sense, but I just don’t see us throwing in the towel at this juncture. There has to be some improvement with the changes we’ve already made.” Even as Haley admits now Bowe’s attitude and performance shows improvement, the question is, can the two truly co-exist? “There is no secret that Haley is just a gruff personality. You saw it in Dallas with Terrell Owens, where everybody blamed it all on T.O. and they shouldn’t have. Then in Arizona (Haley) didn’t just have blow-ups with (Anquan) Boldin, he had them with Larry (Fitzgerald) too. “No doubt Haley is volatile, and if you argue with everybody everywhere you have to look yourself in the mirror at some point. However, from my vantage point they can continue to be together right now. This is also because it has not impacted Bowe’s by carrying on into the regular season yet. That’s when people start to say, 'You can kiss my you-know-what.'” In Marshall’s case, he has missed both Broncos preseason games. But regardless of how much missing both playing opportunities has to do with injury or ego from either player or coach, there are some that feel on both the inside and on the periphery that Marshall’s move is not to fret now. “Just like with Bowe, in my opinion right now Marshall’s money is not being impacted. If this continues into the regular season, then you have a gripe.” Moreover, after considering the instant turnaround in the active practice status of cornerback Champ Bailey, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, and safety Renaldo Hill one day after failing McDaniels’ conditioning test the first day of full-squad training camp, and Broncos owner Pat Bowlen’s obvious final say during situations that call for discipline, the Chiefs insider source opined this: “To me, Marshall looks to have the owner in his back pocket, especially with the way Kyle Orton is playing. When it comes to being in the midst of actually winning and losing in the regular season, Marshall can pee on Josh’s desk and Bowlen isn’t going to say anything. Sooner or later, like what seemingly happened with Bailey and those guys, Bowlen might tell McDaniels to shut up.” Even though Orton responded to his dismal three-interception debut with a more confident performance last Saturday, leverage has not been lessened in Orton’s tenuous situation as the leader of the Broncos offense. “Wait to you get closer to Week One. I wouldn’t be surprised if (Bowlen) comes downstairs and says, 'Brandon, still not working with ones, young man? (Clear throat) I said, Brandon, still not working with the ones? We need to figure out a package for him, don’t we?’ Sometimes it can just be that simple.” The depth chart that the Broncos released on August 22 (the same day as the Seattle game) now has Marshall listed with the first string. Bowlen’s influence in that matter is anyone’s guess; however, to suggest that Bowlen has never questioned his new coach is probably not smart. “How come nobody is saying in Denver how much (general manager) Brian Xanders and boy genius McDaniels could turn out to be a disaster? I'm saying that and I have nothing against Xanders or McDaniels. Those two could lose their jobs playing fantasy football up there. There is no salary cap hit for firing a coach. I just think with the NFC East in the schedule, on top of the other ridiculous match-ups, there is not much relief in sight.” Do McDaniels and the Broncos have leverage with the fact that his Patriots offensive system is proven, and, that it doesn’t require Orton to have a Cutler-like arm on every play? I asked that question when I saw how overt McDaniels was in establishing former Patriot Jabar Gaffney in the short crossing-route game against the Seahawks last Saturday. “When the Kentucky Derby starts, and they blow the horn, you better be sitting on a good horse. You can run out there with Mr. Ed if you want to, and have everyone laughing. Don’t get me wrong, Gaffney is all right, but he was one of the pit crew in New England; he wasn’t driving the race car.” With that emphatic statement, the well-placed Chiefs insider says the Broncos need to just give Marshall his money now because it could be more economic in the end after all. “Just extend the man and get it over with. You can always trade him later. You may stand to save more money with the small amount of good faith that you have left right now. What if the Collective Bargaining Agreement gets resolved, and he becomes an unrestricted free agent? Now you have no good faith after messing with him during the regular season, and then you lose all good faith. Now Marshall is on a plane to Washington, or to the bank with Jerry Jones, and Bowlen is ready to kill everybody in the building because you opened Pandora’s box en route to a bidding war. Not that he would do that, but I am just saying.” Yet ironically, even if Marshall became available to Kansas City, this member of the Chiefs organization would actually rather stick with Bowe. “Marshall is nice - matter of fact, in a lot of respects he’s better then Dwayne, but here is where I draw the line: where there is some smoke, there is fire. His case may have been adjudicated and you won your court proceedings, but I also know Bowe, and I truly believe his heart is in the right place. Is (Bowe’s) work ethic where the coaching staff would like it to be completely? No. I just know that Bowe means well. I don’t know that about Brandon. He’s physically more gifted than D-Bo, but sorry to say, I will settle for the one I have right now.” Yes. Right now.
