Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Who the heck knows?
If that was the case....then the best scenario would have been to not trade for Alex Smith and instead use that 2nd round pick on said Franchise QB. Keep Albert and draft another playmaker at 1.1.

He is a proven commodity as a head coach. Yes he has made mistakes over the years but I think coaches can learn from them, and if he's only as good as he has always been its still a good hire.

Joeckel and Alex Smiths' main shortcomings here are that they are not Geno.

I like the idea of resolving LT and QB in the same offseason. How often do you get credible long term solutions at both those positions in the same offseason?

I think Alex Smith's numbers since he got decent coaching in SF show is what he can do, and maybe he can do even more.

The future is looking pretty good and we've only just got the ***** stank out of Arrowhead
You lost me there. What on God's green earth gives you the idea that anyone, even the HC, think that Alex Smith is the long term answer? If so, he should be fired right now. Oh, and Albert was the LT for the next decade just a few years ago.

Look I hope some miracle happens and they draft Geno but I don't see it.Maybe we are all wrong and Reid and Dorsey are going to stock up on QB's.

I am hearing more and more now Geno is likely to drop to late in the 1st round at the earliest. If Buffalo loves Nassib like is being reported more and more often then where is Geno going?

Yep, and I would settle for anyone of those. I keep holding out hope, since they have not extended Alex Smith, that one of these guys is in the plans, preferably the first one. I love Tyler Wilson as well.

Agree, 100%!

I'm also still crossing fingers they don't see Alex Smith as the 2nd round franchise QB we're discussing. Why then would they have done it? Only guessing, but maybe short term growth (better team, fans in the seats, franchise building momentum) to buy time for long term growth (grooming the franchise QB).

I'm less concerned with 1.1 and whomever that will be, than not selecting another QB somewhere with some decent potential to be far better than Alex Smith.

I've brought substance time after time. I've noted the non-1.1 QBs who've gone on to greatness, I've posted the list of the recent 1.1 QBs that weren't 'generational' prospects, and more.

The problem is that you're fixated, just as this board was fixated on Sanchez in 2009. It's not the fault of others that posters such as yourself and DJ's are being too stupid, or stubborn, to learn the lesson from 2009.

That's exactly what we're doing. What pisses people off, and why CP is a hotbed of negativity in Chiefs Nation at the moment is we were doing this exact same thing 4 years ago. The EXACT same thing.

"Hey, Matt Cassel wasn't my first pick either, but just give them time."

"Hey, I don't like the Tyson Jackson pick either, but it was a weak draft at the top. You have to give these guys some time. It's just one draft."

"The team is coming off a 2-14 year. They're not going to be good. Back off Pioli and Cassel. Give them time."

My only question is how much time does Reid and Alex deserve before we fire up the next airplane banner?

I really hope their plan works. And I'll give them a season to see how good it looks. But it's just not looking very sunny from my end at the moment. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, though.

The lesson to be learned from 2009 is not to swallow the load being fed to you by an overhyped general manager and not to waste top end 2nd round picks on backup quarterbacks with average ceilings.

We learned from 2009. The problem is that the front office clearly hasn't and seems more than happy to just plod merrily forward with the same flawed plan that doomed the last idiot they put in charge.

And he really was a staggeringly stupid jackass.

One of the biggest things holding this franchise back for so long was a competent HC. Reid is a huge gain. This is the best staff we've had in years. At least a decade. Maybe since the 90's.

As for doing the same thing, how exactly is it the same in the draft category?

Tyson Jackson wasn't a top 10 worthy player until the week of the draft. ***** picked him based off need. We're picking the best player based on him being the best player.

And how long do we give this regime? I'll say 3 years, like any other regime. But I have a feeling you'll see this team in the playoffs before then. Maybe even this year.

How do you figure?

My claim is that you'd better not replace a good young player unless that player's outstanding. I stand by that.

It's a secondary argument designed to address whatever benign nonsense you're spouting happens to be. I still think the pick is an obvious one - Geno Smith is the biggest potential difference maker in the draft.

But setting aside my personal belief and simply dealing with yours - that the draft is weak - my position remains that if you're going to operate in that environment and you're going to excise your team of a talented young player with the intention of replacing him, the guy you replace him with had better be outstanding.

I don't see anything contradictory there at all.

You'd love to be pleasantly surprised, as would we all!!

What I hold onto for another week (or 5 days at least), is I see more reasonable abilities from Dorsey and Reid than Pioli and Haley, both un wavering egotistical pompous asses.
