2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Mendoza/Teaford/Adcock/filler while waiting for Paulino or Duffy. They can and should actually try Crow as a starter at least in the offseason and ST, but we'll see. If Montgomery or Dwyer or Lamb is ready, they could be in the mix here, too.

Bullpen:

Crow (I don't think he'll stick as a starter)
Holland
Collins
Herrera
Coleman
leftover filler
I have just never understood why leaving Gordon at the #1? Just because he hits better there? BFD he's a major leaguer (he's not even a top 3 hitter on the team) and he's been here a while now he needs to learn to hit out of different spots in the order because this is almost becoming a liability because we could be scoring more runs w/ Escobar at leadoff and his base stealing ability. Hitting in the #2 spot shouldn't effect AG at all. We haven't had a true good leadoff man since Johnny Damon.

base stealing out of the leadoff man has to be the most overrated aspect of the position. How about the fact that Gordon gets on base more? Or the fact that he sees way more pitches? Takes more walks? Hits a lot of doubles?

Gordon, in June, hit .349 with a .434 obp and 11 doubles and 2 triples with 2 steals.
Alcides, in June, hit .333 with a .368 obp and 6 doubles and 1 triple with 4 steals.

Guess who was on 2b more?

Is that not a good enough reason? I would say so. Also - Gordon OBP .365, Escobar OBP .350

imo you don't start a rookie(Myers) that high in the lineup to start

Escobar up to 2

Gordon is basically at #1 because he's shown that he can handle the pressure of it.

I don't give a shit if our lead-off hitter never steals a base; it's irrelevant.

I care that the SOB gets on base, and Gordon is pretty damn good at this.

Interesting note from Kevin Goldstein yesterday on Myers in his minor league update -
Will Myers, OF, Royals (Triple-A Omaha): 2-for-3, 2B, R, RBI. Your Star of Stars (that's what they call it) in the Triple-A All-Star game; really no need to still be in the minors.

Another interesting note I thought about today in the car - Moore has done an excellent job of retaining our talent. I mean, he signed Escobar and Perez right before they both broke out.

The more I read this stuff about Myers, the more my furor grows for Moore.

Just so everyone knows, tomorrow is the first time all season we will have the starting lineup we were expecting going into the season. That's Cain, Getz, and Perez instead of Dyson/Burgeous, Yuni, and Q/Pena.

Is it Frenchy Quarter Friday?

I'm going to my first game this year. Free. It's Mizzou night, so it's like mandatory that I have to be there.

And who's idea was it to have Mizzou Night on Friday the 13th? Must be some KU asshat in the Royals PR Dept....

Second half hopes or expectations? For me:

1. Marked improvement from Hosmer. Better plate discipline and a much higher OBP. The hits will come.
2. Cain to stay on the field. Hoping but not expecting this (since he's not 100 percent even now), and guessing his eventual absence will bring Myers up.
3. Hopeful to move Broxton, Collins, and Frenchy. The first two should fetch prospects, and getting JF's contract off the books would be a win.
4. Move prospects for a starting pitcher. One not of the Sanchez variety.
5. Need Gordon to continue his upward tick since getting back at the top of the order.
6. Love to see two 30-HR players in Butler and Moose.
7. Could not care less what Hochevar does and will not be fooled if he has a "great second half." We know what he is.
8. Escobar to get serious Gold Glove discussion.
