****Official 2013-14 Missouri Tiger Football Repository Thread****

We have two things to look forward to this year:

1) The potential beginning of the Maty Mauk Era. Mauk represents the best chance for this program to get back to a level of respectability after horrendous QB play cost us multiple games last year.

2) The last year of the Gary Pinkel era. Pinkel's entrenched cronyism won't play in a conference this competitive, especially if he couples his abysmal gameday coaching with lackadaisical, worst-in-conference recruiting. Pinkel was the formerly adequate meal that has now turned into a four pound bowel obstruction. It's time to jam a Fleet's enema up our collective asses.

Here is the schedule. We dodge Alabama, LSU, and Arkansas in the west and the Non-con is decidedly weaker than years past.

8/31: Murray State
9/7: Toledo
9/21: @ Indiana
9/28: Arkansas State
10/5:@ Vanderbilt
10/12: @ Georgia
10/19:Florida
10/26: South Carolina
11/2:Tennessee
11/9: @ Kentucky
11/23: @ Ole Miss
11/30: aTm

Looks like 6-6. Undefeated in non-con, 2-6 in league play.

I will eventually update the OP with a list of high profile in-state recruits that decide to go elsewhere after a half-assed attempt to gain their services. The inevitable cavalcade of *** rejects, skeezers, skanks, and scalliwags we get will fill out the ranks.

Razors, cyanide capsules, and Jonestown Kool-Aid are available in the break room. Second door on the left.

Since every Mizzou thread eventually dies of AIDS, I recommend starting anti-retroviral therapy immediately. I believe Walgreens covers Express Scripts.

Premium In-State Players:

Roderick Johnson: **** OT, Florissant, MO.
Monte Harrison: **** WR, Lee's Summit, MO.
Jimmy Swain: **** LB, Lee's Summit, MO

Commitment List: From to and possibly

Spoiler!

Ideal is getting guys like Rhodes with regularity so that if one of them doesn't develop like you'd prefer, you have another guy with the bulk and athleticism to step up. If that player hits his ceiling, he's elite.

Britt, unlike so many, actually hit his ceiling. If we can get more talented players to do the same, we're going to be better off (obviously). That's the next step I want to see in the program.
I think that was my point; Britt WAS going to reach his ceiling. He won the Missouri 4A heavyweight championship and went something like 45-0. I'm pretty sure he beat Boehm. Guys with that kind of leverage, quickness, and work ethic are going to succeed. I'd take a guy like him over a **** Nick Nasty, even though I thought Nick would be good.

Nah, I can't get there.

It's damn unlikely, don't get me wrong. But upsets are made by turnovers. Turnovers are made by pressuring the QB. Mizzou pressures the QB better than any team in college football (and almost exclusively through their front 4).

And while 'Bama's defense is absolutely dominant, Mizzou presents matchup issues with it's WR size/speed that no other team 'bama has faced this year present.

IF we're able to hold serve (huge if) and get there, Mizzou has as good a chance to beat 'Bama as any team in the country, FSU excluded.

Matchups will be key and if there's any team that presents a difficult matchup for Alabama, it's Missouri. To say there's 'no chance' Mizzou can beat them is to also say that if they played 20 times, Bama would win all of them - I don't think so. With a few breaks and big plays, Missouri is capable of getting it done. It's unlikely, but not impossible.
The worst part of all this is that if by some chance we were to beat Bama, there is no way we would get a shot at the Championship....too many people want to see Oregon and FSU go at it for MU to even be considered.

The computers love us though. And if we come out as SEC champions, it would be tough for human voters to reasonably drop us far enough that we'd be out of the BCS championship game...IMO.

I don't know that would be the case.

We'll see how things shake out and IF there truly are 3 unbeatens at the end of the season.

Florida State's computer rankings will likely go down from here (they have No. 7 Miami, unranked Florida and the Coastal division champ as the only "high profile" teams left). It's possible Missouri would pass them with its slate (No. 1 Bama, top 15 aTm, top 25ish Ole Miss and Tennessee) remaining should it win out.

Key will be winning over the pollsters. Hard to imagine a case in which an unbeaten SEC team would NOT play for the national title.

Honestly, I'd be stunned if a Mizzou win didn't propel them over one of those 2 teams. Look at the resume they'd have at that point - wins over Florida, Georgia, A&M, Bama and plucky squads like Indiana (with good wins of their own) and Ol' Miss (who was ranked and managed to beat LSU).

I don't think it will happen, but I also don't expect to have the football yanked away from us if it does. That would be a virtually impossible resume to ignore and the BCS computers would almost certainly move us ahead of the field at that point.

Hosick is the one who beat Boehm, IIRC.

I love the nasty streak our line has. We need them to be mean all day against Clowney...make him start thinking about staying healthy for the draft.

Thanks, I forgot that Hosick was a wrestler. Of course, it's pretty crazy to think about a QB beating our best offensive lineman.

These issues always seem to sort themselves out. I'm hoping Mizzou doesn't do any of the "sorting", but I'm pretty sure we will.

ESPN Insider article that provides anonymous quotes from coaches on each top five team. Mizzou's report is complimentary and seems pretty accurate.

5. Missouri Tigers

BCS: .8219
Next three games: South Carolina, Tennessee, at Kentucky

How they beat you: "That's just a good football team," one coach said. "Gary [Pinkel] is a good coach. He's been doing this a long time. He's got experienced football players. He's got juniors and seniors and they're hard-nosed kids. The three defensive ends they have are legitimate guys that can control the game." Added another: "This isn't some fluke. There's a lot of talent out there. I know they don't have their quarterback right now [with James Franklin injured], but they've got everyone else." Said another: "I think a kid that doesn't get talked about that much is No. 48 in the middle [fifth-year senior linebacker Andrew Wilson]. He plays hard, he really gets to the ball."

How you beat them: "I think you have to kind of nickel-and-dime them down the field, but they get tougher and stronger near the end zone," said one coach. "You've got to stay tough down there and punch it in, anyway. The margin for error is low." Added another coach: "I don't get why people think Missouri is some kind of soft team from the Big 12. They're as physical as anyone in the league. Look at the receivers, the defensive line. To beat them, you have to match that -- or run by them."

You're looking at it wrong.

Even if that happened it would represent the single greatest accomplishment of the program since 1969, which probably exceeds the duration of most of the lives of the people that post on this MB, myself included.

An SEC championship would change everything for us competing in this league for the foreseeable future.

Doesn't matter. Chances of it happening are slim to none.

Missouri has done a very good job of developing athletic specimens. It's the only reason they've been able to compete at this level, but don't let your homer glasses distract you from the obvious: they still need to recruit better football players.

It's inexcusable that we have 2-3 of the top ten players in the state committed at this point. You put far too much pressure on scouting and player development when you whiff on players you should have little to no trouble getting.

Absolutely.

As good as this staff is at identifying and developing material what could they do if they did a semi-decent job at recruiting it.

I look more at who's offering a kid than I do stars but generally speaking people that point at xyz 2* that's a stud and abc 4* that's a bust are missing the point which is that # of stars are proportionate to success. More 5* pan out than 4* than 3* and so on.

And our recruiting is and has been at the bottom of the SEC making it all the more difficult for us to favorably compete in spite of it. The fact we're having a good year doesn't detract from that. There's years upon years of data w/ respect to recruiting that spell it out.

How many of the in-state top ten have they offered? How many are still uncommitted?

Frankly, I'm much more focused on how we are recruiting in Florida and Georgia than how we are doing in Missouri. Frankly, Missouri just doesn't produce that many elite college football players.
