Must be the back flip then. In the game thread, there were actually quite a few posts frustrated at how Staten exaggerated contact so effectively (which, like Smart, is a major skill of his).

With that in mind ... here’s the All-Advanced-Stats Big 12 team:

Markel Brown, Oklahoma State — Sneaks into the final spot over Iowa State’s DeAndre Kane thanks to a more complete game. Brown ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 in Win Shares and is seventh in Value Add, as his offensive game has few weaknesses.

Andrew Wiggins, Kansas — Advanced numbers won’t show the true value of his defense, as he’s a great on-ball defender but doesn’t rack up counting stats like steals and blocks (until Saturday at least). The numbers do love his offense, though, as his ability to get to the free-throw line and make freebies is his greatest strength.

Melvin Ejim, Iowa State — His rebounding is overrated by traditional measures (Iowa State plays a top-10 tempo, which artificially boosts his rebounds per game), but he’s still a good rebounder, and combining that with excellent 2-point shooting still makes him valuable.

Juwan Staten, West Virginia — The runner-up for the advanced stats Big 12 player of the year, Staten is without question the Big 12’s best offensive player statistically with his ability to pass, make 2s and get to the free-throw line. He’s also a great defensive rebounder for his size, meaning a low steal rate is the only thing keeping him from the top spot.

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State (Most Valuable Player) — Take away all the BS, and Smart has provided more statistically to his team than any other player in the conference … and that’s even while sitting out a three-game suspension. Smart was the only player to be ranked in the top five of all three advanced rankings, and he’s actually in the top three of each, meaning his off-field antics have distracted from what has been an amazing season. Smart’s value is boosted especially by his steal rate (ninth nationally), and he’s the only Big 12 point guard that can be considered an elite player on both ends of the floor.

My B12 first team would be: Wiggins, Embiid, Smart, Staten, and Ejim. MVP goes to Wiggins over Embiid due to playing significantly more minutes (though Embiid had the greatest impact when actually in).

Morgantown, W.Va. — Kansas University freshman center Joel Embiid was to fly to Los Angeles Sunday and visit a back specialist on Monday morning, coach Bill Self confirmed to the Journal-World after the Jayhawks’ 92-86 loss to West Virginia on Saturday at WVU Coliseum.

The 7-foot Embiid, who has been bothered by back issues for several weeks now, did not make the trip to Morgantown for the game.

‘We wanted to get a second opinion and wanted to send him to the very best authority,” Self said, not identifying the name of the doctor. “He’ll leave on Sunday and see him (doctor) Monday morning.”

Self said he remained hopeful Embiid, who missed Wednesday’s game against Texas Tech, would be available soon. It is believed surgery will not be needed to correct this back problem.

“Hopefully we get real positive news,” Self said. “Hopefully he can be on the practice floor very very soon. We will not put him out there just because he feels better but because the doctors says it’s time to get back out there. Hopefully it will be real soon, if not we’ll sit him a little longer. We still don’t think it will affect (his participation in) the NCAA Tournament in any way,” Self added.
Embiid is also on the way to a back specialist in LA. It certainly doesn't sound like he's going to be playing this week in any case. I just hope they give him good news as far as being able to play in the actual tourney. The team's NC hopes probably ride on this doctor's opinion.

You're reaching. You don't have to look for these silly reasons. If Marcus Smart didn't dive as blatantly and as often as he does, nobody would dislike him.

Diving = unsportsmanlike. Unsportsmanlike athletes = not liked. It's all very simple.

And my point is that if he didn't do those things while beating KU at the same time, hardly anybody here would care. The winning is what makes it all the more aggravating.

In the Self interview posted earlier he talked like he could be back for the conference tournament. Hopefully they don't play him but Self sounded like it was a second opinion thing and I believe he said he likely wouldn't miss the NCAA.

Not for me. It's frustrating for me because he can beat people straight up and that's basketball I'd very much like to see. But he foregoes curb stomping dudes for flopping like a bitch and takes away the opportunity for me to see an incredible talent at work.

I was hoping I'd see some epic ****ing basketball from this kid, but all the good he does is overshadowed by him being a douchenozzle.

I hope that's all it is. They don't seem to be releasing a lot of definite information about it. If playing is something that's going to potentially jeopardize his future in any way, he won't play and rightfully so.

We'd probably need God mode Wiggins to show up like he did in the 2nd half yesterday to stand much of a chance at that point.

But while everyone is busy hating on him for winning while flopping, he actually does do that. He's having an even better season than last year. In fact, as I posted earlier, statistically he's had the greatest impact of any player in the B12 this year.

Was named to all-big 12 1st team and a unanimous selection to all-defensive team. Clearly the coaches are tired of his antics.

Ejim was just named B12 POY. He's been good, but that's a puzzling choice over several better options (Wiggins, Embiid, Smart, Staten).

List of all the awards are here: http://www.big12sports.com/ViewArtic...CLID=209429962

Got 4 out of my 5 on the first team, but Embiid should clearly be there. If it wasn't for him, KU probably doesn't win conference this year.

So RIck Barnes wins his 4th award while Self is sitting on 3. I'm not quite certain how that works after Self won his 10th straight league but I'm sure there's a rational argument out there somewhere.
