KU football loses 2 scholarships
Two players left team while not in good academic standing
Published Tuesday, March 18, 2008 That's all the NCAA would allow. The NCAA imposed a two-scholarship penalty on the Jayhawks for failing to meet academic standards, KU associate athletics director Paul Buskirk said Monday, two years after NCAA sanctions reduced KU's scholarship limit to 22 from 25. The latest penalty — imposed because KU had a poor academic progress rate (APR) and two players who left the program while not in good academic standing — affects only the 2008 class. The APR is a measure of a specific program's collective academic performance and progress toward graduation over a four-year period. KU scored 919 on the APR, six points below the 925 threshhold at which the NCAA can begin docking scholarships. However, KU would not have been penalized if two players had not left the program in poor academic standing. Those two defections produced the two-scholarship penalty. For each player who does so, the NCAA can penalize a school one scholarship, with a maximum of three. KU appealed the penalty on the grounds that its graduation rate had increased from 46 percent in 2005 to 51 percent in 2006 and 56 percent last year, but the transfer-heavy 2003 signing class, which will come off the books next year, ultimately cost KU. "We can guarantee that next year when we have this conversation, football will be above 925," Buskirk said. Buskirk said KU urged the NCAA to look at its trends since the 2003-04 school year, when KU's APR score was 899, and to take into consideration that the football team registered a school-record team GPA of 2.69 in 2007. "If you look at the profile that makes up our team today, as opposed to four years ago, it's vastly different," Buskirk said. Neither the penalties levied in 2006 nor the APR penalties extend beyond this year. The NCAA sanctions from 2006 limited KU to 22 scholarships in 2007 and 2008. No others penalized The Kansas men's basketball team scored 981 out of a possible 1,000 on the APR, while women's basketball (930) and baseball (925), two programs which scored below the 925 standard last year, raised their scores to acceptable levels. Both the men's and women's cross country teams scored 1,000. http://cjonline.com/stories/031808/haw_258894711.shtml |

To level the playing field, all cross country runners will be required to wear helmets while fans throw baseballs at their heads.
