Another symbol of my childhood gone.
Loved him as a kid, liked his efforts for MDA that reminded me the start of school was close but disliked late life Jerry as he became extremely bitter and hateful towards many. RIP Nutty Professor you lived a long successful life.

Man, I always loved watching some of his old movies and of course the telethon every year.
RIP Jerry, thanks for the laughs.

As a kid, I remember liking the Martin and Lewis comedies, but I wonder how they've aged. It seems like a lot of movies from that era didn't age well at all.
About six months ago, I put a couple of old movies on in the background while I was doing stuff at home, just to check them out. One was Bob Hope's "Call Me Bwana", and the other was Jerry Lewis' "The Patsy" (important disclaimer: the patsy was after the Martin/Lewis breakup). I was unable to make it through either movie. They were both so bad that they jarred me out of the movie and into the moviemaking. I was wondering what the director thought of the scenes, or the editor, or the camerapeople. Did 1960 audiences roll in the aisles at a 90 second closeup of Jerry Lewis crossing his eyes and sticking his tongue out? Or being unable to put a jacket on, continuously putting part of it over his head, even though his character worked as a bellhop? There was a scene in the Bob Hope movie that was excruciating, where he "discovers" a golf course in tropical Africa that happens to have Arnold Palmer teeing off, and Bob tells some terrible golf jokes while hitting a few off the tee. I came away with the impression that audiences probably haven't changed that much, though I'm sure these scenes weren't as painfully bad in 1960 as they are in 2017. But I did get the impression that Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis had free reign and no one would tell them no. I think they were just doing whatever they wanted in these movies, and they'd hit the point where they thought everything they defecated out was gold.

But Jerry Lewis is a particularly egregious area. The only thing I can recall seeing was just part of a scene, I think one of his more famous ones. . . . It's where he's at a nightclub and is supposed to be all suave. I think the character was named Buddy or Bubby. Even what I've seen of Rat Pack stuff and the Roasts, I don't remember seeing much out of Jerry. Never watched a Telethon. Pretty much know him as an ancient grouch who didn't think women could be funny. That said, he had a long storied life and I hope his passing was peaceful and surrounded by loved ones. EDIT: Reading obits, I just recalled . . . . OF COURSE I've seen 'The King of Comedy.' It's Scorsese ferchrissakes.

RIP He was a remarkable man.
My favorite Jerry Lewis moment, when Sinatra surprise reunited him with Martin during the '76 telethon. |
