Mark Cuban: 'Horrible' state of college basketball hurting NBA

Mark Cuban says 'horrible' state of college basketball hurting NBA

DALLAS -- The "horrible" state of college basketball is hurting the NBA, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said.

Cuban said he doesn't enjoy watching the college game, but his bigger concern is that the physical, slow-down style that has become common in the NCAA results in prospects who are poorly prepared to jump to the NBA.

"If they want to keep kids in school and keep them from being pro players, they're doing it the exact right way by having the 35-second shot clock and having the game look and officiated the way it is," Cuban said Wednesday night. "Just because kids don't know how to play a full game of basketball.

"You've got three kids passing on the perimeter. With 10 seconds on the shot clock, they try to make something happen and two other kids stand around. They don't look for anything and then run back on defense, so there's no transition game because two out of five or three out of five or in some cases four out of five kids aren't involved in the play.

"It's uglier than ugly, and it's evidenced by the scoring going down. When the NBA went through that, we changed things."

Cuban, an Indiana alumnus often asked by disgruntled Hoosiers to buy out coach Tom Crean's contract, said he is actually a fan of Crean because he coaches a faster-paced, freer-flowing offense than the vast majority of his NCAA counterparts.

Cuban hopes that the NCAA's rules and officiating style change to allow faster offenses to succeed instead of rewarding teams that milk the clock and play boring basketball.

"It's horrible. It's ridiculous," Cuban said. "It's worse than high school. You've got 20 to 25 seconds of passing on the perimeter and then somebody goes and tries to make a play and do something stupid, and scoring's gone down.

"The referees couldn't manage a White Castle. Seriously, the college game is more physical than the NBA game, and the variation in how it's called from game to game [is a problem]. Hell, they don't even have standards on balls. They use different balls. One team's got one ball, the other team's got another ball. There are so many things that are ridiculous."

It's the time of year when I start giving a shit about the NBA again. Other than that, I don't watch it.

If KC had a NBA team there's no doubt I'd care about it.

I dont watch regular season NBA either, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the games. It's because there are simply too many games, just like with the MLB.

I mean, for those claiming they don't watch regular season NBA games....do you watch regular season NCAA games?

The way I read it is he thinks the only way to make it better is make it more like the NBA and I agree with him.

I don't know if only shortening the shot clock to 30 is going to make any difference it would just make them throw up their bricks faster. They probably need to implement the NBA's illegal defense rule and stop most zone defenses.

But if you did that I don't foresee many upsets in the tournament which is the most appealing aspect to the average fan.

I watch about 20-30 NBA regular season games and I agree there is just to many. My plan would be to start the season after Christmas and only play 42 games. That would increase the importance of the games and keeps players from having to play back to back.

It will never happen though because the players and owners need all that money.

I don't watch NCAA games hardly at all. shitty product

Yes. I watch all KU games, a ton of Big 12 games and quite a bit of the other marquee program's games.

I know I'd watch the shit out of the NBA if I had a local rooting interest. But I'm not going to chode it up and root for the Lakers or Spurs or some shit when I have no connection and can't just drive to a game when I want.

That's what I believe as well. The teams with the most talented players would wipe the floor with teams less talented because they could no longer slow down the game to make it more "even", which is what leads to most of the upsets.

I've been meaning to make a thread about college basketball. To me, its probably the worst out of the major American sports (NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, NCAAF, NCAAB). They really need to change it as fast as possible.

They need to shorten the shot clocks, so that teams can't spend 20 seconds making perimeter passes anymore. Seriously, teams in college basketball don't even make it past the 3 point line until about 10-15 seconds left on the clock.

They need to back the 3 point line up because the spacing in college basketball is ****ing horrendous. It looks like there are 15 players on the court at a time because they're all packed around each other like sardines. It keeps any kind of great movement from happening. And for some reason people like to praise defense in college basketball. The defenses aren't really good. It's that the offenses are ****ing atrocious. You don't 5 ball screens and 7 dribble handoffs 25 feet away from the basket every possession.

I think the shot clock should be even lower than 30. Making the shot clock shorter would help IMO because coaches would draw better plays instead of relying on 30 seconds of perimeter passing to exploit a bored and indifferent defense. Bringing some urgency to the offense would force coaches to have better game plans and force offenses to be more efficient than they are.

I don't blame it on the players near as much as I blame the college coaches. Guys like Bruce Weber run some motion O and routinely get nothing and with <8 seconds it becomes "high ball screen pick" and prayer.

I would love to see the clock shortened to under 30 and force the offense to become shooters once again. There is an entire generation of players that cannot hit the 15/18 footer because it doesn't pay to shoot that shot when the 3 point line is so close.

So, shorten the clock, lengthen the 3 point arc and maybe it opens up the mid range game again.

I still love watching college bball. It's a great game. But I also love the NBA. It's really become a great league again.

The difference between the NBA and MLB is that starting pitchers, which are hugely important to the outcome of each game, are different every day. So you are seeing a "different" team each day. This helps with excitement and not feeling as if you are seeing the same thing day after day. With that said, you can see how that many games (or close to it) are needed in a season. The NBA season is probably about 20 games too long.

Excellent points by King and William. I totally agree about moving the 3 line back. I think they should do that as well in the NBA because teams are just camping out around the 3 point arc anymore. Maybe eliminate the corner 3. I don't know how that effect the game and spacing though...
