FO: Chiefs have 8th Worst Defense Ever Through 5 Games

Quote:
The flip side of the Buffalo defense is the Kansas City defense, which has been horrendous through the first five games. The Chiefs now are the eighth-worst defense ever tracked by DVOA through five games.

Worst Defensive DVOA
Through 5 Games, 1983-2021
Year Team W-L DVOA
2019 MIA 0-5 35.8%
1998 WAS 0-5 35.7%
2006 HOU 1-4 32.4%
1998 PHI 0-5 31.3%
1992 NE 0-5 31.2%
2001 ARI 2-3 30.1%
1985 BUF 0-5 29.5%
2021 KC 2-3 29.3%
2017 NE 3-2 28.2%
2010 BUF 0-5 27.8%
2012 BUF 2-3 27.8%
2018 TB 2-3 27.7%

And yet, I think the idea that the Chiefs are no longer a good team has been overstated. The Chiefs are still 14th in DVOA despite a losing record. Even after a poor game against the Bills, their offense still ranks No. 1 on the year, ahead of the Buccaneers and Rams. Some of the issue here is one of schedule strength early. Kansas City has played the hardest schedule so far according to average DVOA of opponent. It's also the No. 4 schedule of opposing defenses and the No. 2 schedule of opposing offenses. So both sides of the ball don't look as good as they really are because of the level of competition. The Chiefs, for example, rank only fifth in unadjusted offensive VOA -- it's when we add the adjustments for schedule and fumble recovery luck that they move into the top spot.

There's never been a team like the Chiefs that was so good on offense and so bad on defense this early in the season, but I did go looking for similar teams that were not as extreme. I started by looking for other teams that had offensive and defensive DVOA both over 25% after five games. There's one such team: the 2013 San Diego Chargers, who ranked third in offense and last in defense after five games. The Chargers started 2-3, like the Chiefs. They went on to finish 9-7 and made the playoffs, upsetting the Bengals in the wild-card round and then losing to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. The Chargers finished that season second in offensive DVOA and last in defensive DVOA, although their defensive rating improved from 27.3% after Week 5 to 19.3% at the end of the year.
https://www.footballoutsiders.com/dv...cent-greatness

So the Chiefs unsurprisingly have one of the worst defenses ever tracked by DVOA, but there may be hope as the offense is still as elite as ever. Can they ever get a stop, though?

Apparently we're allowing something like 8yds per play.

The only team to average 8yds per play was the 2007 Patriots which are thought to be one of the best offensive teams in history.

So, essentially, our defense makes everyone look like the best offensive team in history.

How did we get here?!

The only thing I'm certain of, is that no one here seen it coming at all... as I recall

Certainly not me

Even after the horrid SB loss, the offseason was almost jubilant around here... the O line was fixed, Helaire was gonna bust out, and at least on paper the defense won't skip a beat!

Truth is no one should've or could've expected this complete defensive collapse, suddenly being this bad just doesn't add up

Absolutely. Our corners were thin but not bad on the whole. Sneed was a potential top-10 guy. Matthieu was Matthieu and Thornhill was going to be back full steam. Our LBs have been mediocre for years but the idea that we could put Gay in there with more experience and have a more cerbral Nick Bolton on the field was an arrow pointed upward. The DL had Reed which allowed Jones to kickoutside. Danna and Wharton flashed some as rookies and were supposed to improve. Clark wasn't worth his contract but was certainly above average. Nnnadi is Nnadi in the middle.

We've literally failed massively at every single level at the exact same time. It's impossible to place blame on any one position group because they've all been so atrocious.

Its a tired answer that gives insight into nothing, but here goes anyway... the Super Bowl losers curse is real

Can't explain why, but its somehow a thing

Not throwing in the towel with 12 games left to get right, but with the talent on display so far... its tough to see us bucking that voodoo

To me it looked like they were just running low efficiency plays at the end, and they were still turning into big plays. This defense is ridiculous. But I still have faith in the team.

Stadium went from super excited to downright pissed in a matter of seconds. If they don't call that BS then maybe the Chiefs get back in it. Killed any momentum that we had gotten in the 3rd

Even if they did the D in the 1st half would miss tackles and still allowed them to put up a million points in the 2nd half

a lot better than I thought.

The offense wasn't clicking against the Bills, the Bills do have a good D though. But Mahomes was off and then you had some drops, bad 1st half play calling. It was a mess for our standard.

No our defense got its head out of its ass and didn’t let guys like Dawson Knox run wide open

They also started pressuring Allen

If you think Buffalo was content to sit on a 24-13 lead at Arrowhead you’re out of your mind

This article is interesting and reminds me of the Greg Robinson defense that even the President joked about at the time. IIRC it was the 2003 team under Vermeil but could be wrong.
