I'm In the Gutter....

Or I should say "I'm Into the Gutters." Having my roof replaced next week, and want to replace current old guttersw with new gutters with the shield tops (gutter gard) to keep leaves and stuff from getting inside.

Anybody here had recent experience with any KC vendors? Good or bad experience? I'm all ears, sending out for quotes next week.

I know many of you have been up close and personal with gutters at one time or another....

Who should I trust my sludgy rain water to?

Not in KC. But my home is 1700 sq ft and it cost us $850 for seamless and gutter guards.

I had Leafguard. Worked great for leaves and water went into the gutters, did get water freeze up when it was butt ass cold. Also in Minnesota-a little colder than KC.

hang back a bit. a new roof will lose shit as it settles unless you are going metal or tile. if you are having issues with gutterfill trim your trees of roof litter or stop throwing the ill gotten booty from panty raids up there.

LiveSteam has those gutter helmets on his house and a bunch of acorns and crap still worked their way into them over time, and they were a monumental pain in the ass to clean out. Wouldn't waste my money on them. There are also the screen type that probably work better but if you have a pine tree near your house they will still get clogged with needles. I just went with the oversize gutters and downspouts but I still have to babysit them in the rainy season. I think the best option is to just cut down every tree within 50 feet of your house.

from my buddy that owns a very good roofing company

I could get really in depth about this but I'll try to keep it short.

Yes, the solid aluminum covers with the rounded fronts that work off of capillary action work the best. The down side is getting the water to slow down in high flow areas. The other problem is debris can sometime clog up the front water channel but it can be easily cleaned with a hose from the ground. Other than that they work great. We used to install Leafproof but have switched to GutterLock elite. They are basically the same thing. I would try to find a contractor that installs one of those. Gutter helmet is way overpriced.

We also install a very inexpensive screen for people who are on a tight budget. They work great for leaves but not for seeds.

Don't use any of the foam bs or caterpillar looking crap.

also, you can find calculators online to verify the minimum size gutter you need and downspout size. I would not do anything less than 4", but a size larger never hurts.

Here's the deal. They make two screen sizes.

What you want is the screen with the smaller holes. I have maples all around (hey, free syrup every spring!) and I get very few stuck. My neighbor has the large holes and his gutter looks like ranks and files of North Korean soldiers with all the maple seeds.

Go small or you'll regret it.

Thanks for all the advice. Gutter Helmet guy was here yesterday. His presentation skills were shit, but he tried real hard. He's going to email me a quote. Another guy with Leaf Guard refused to give me a quote. He said because of my steel siding his gutters need 6" of room to attach and I only have 4 to 5" because of the steel siding. Also, they promised me a $50 dinner coupon for giving me an estimate, but since he didn't give me an estimate, they backed out of that. I thought that was pretty bad business. Not my fault their product won't fit on my house.
