Building a house

So the S/O and I are looking into buying a nice plot of land and building a home. We have discussed having a basement- sub-basement combination. I know having the basement dug out is an additional cost what I'm really curious about is having to dig deeper to accommodate a sub basement is that going to cost double what just a basement would cost or? I know a lot of factors go into digging out a basement (type of soil and depth of bedrock/water table) but assuming perfect conditions.

Anyone with knowledge on this subject? Anyone ever done this before or currently have a sub-basement? TIA.

Sex swing.

Edit: Damn it, I completely missed Lew's sex swing reference earlier. I'm glad he and I are on the same page, though.

So the sub is a basement below the main basement??

sub-basement to use as a weather bunker and storage of food and adult beverages area. Basement would be used for entertainment purposes - loud movies and music etc.
Wouldn't a regular basement be used for the same purpose? Just section it off into the areas for their purposes? If you want a bomb shelter area, build a cinder box room in the basement.

What is the ft sq? Is the house a ranch? If so, that could be a big darn basement. You could build your regular rectangle basement with a "tongue" sticking out that is not cover by the house for your special room?

Basements are super cool. Perfect place for the man of the house (oops). I spend a lot of my time in mine.

I wouldn't put a basement under a basement. If that is the def of a subbasement.

We should all post pics of our mancaves. Might have all ready been done.

When we built our extension, if you go out, might as well go up. If you are going out and up, might as well go down too. The basement was the most expensive, but soooo glad I did.

BTW, we have a weird old "T" shaped 1903 farmhouse that we added on to.

If I had to do it again, I would have just dug out the area under my garage.
Not a bad idea. Where all the concrete is anyway.

Except I could dedicate the sub basement to a specific thing (range) and leave the basement to something else theater/entertainment. I would love to build up but bigger houses above ground attract unwanted attention. Im perfect alt happy with a ~2000 sqft above ground 3 bed 3 bath and then dig down.

You plan on having a dungeon down there. And of course it will cost more you are going deeper and removing more material. Also the uncertainty of what is deeper without more soil testing and all. It's Colorado right so lots of rock.

Well I figured it would cost more just sure if it's double.

What about building a separate out building? Or an addition on the house above ground? Plot size limitations?

Me thinks, digging down (2 stories) to place concrete 25 yd/m gun range will cost a bundle.

Quite the conundrum.

Another issue, if you are going that deep, will it require a special back hoe?

Concrete is expensive. I bet you that is will cost close to double.

I am sure when the rest of the CP crew that know a heck of a lot more then I do, will provide quality advice.

Plot size is no worry. Plenty of land. I just want something that would protect from tornados or be used without having to go outside. As I mentioned previously houses that appear bigger on the outside attract unwanted attention from criminals.

I would think you could grade one side and dig th rest to 90 degrees. The sub basement would be smaller than the basement.
