Their cover of "House of the Rising Sun" is just so obvious.

I should add that opinion generally only applies if I already know the original.

I remember as a teen Armored Saint had a cover of Saturday Night Special. I didn't know it was a cover of Skynard. I knew Skynard but not much of them at the time. This old fart got pissed when he showed me the original and I told him Armored Saint's version was better. Yes, I was just a dumb teenager.

Meh, I think that one is okay. I still like the original better, though.

I suppose you can either thank or revile the Gourds for starting the whole bluegrass/folk/country artists covering rap...

Yeah, I'm not a huge Skynyrd fan but that's borderline sacrilegious.

I would say almost 90% of the time, I would automatically say "the original is better". That has most to do with the amount of respect I have for music and the music that came before me.

I love Jimi Hendrix, for example, but "All Along the Watchtower" is Bob Dylan's song.

The Priest cover below is the one example where I prefer the cover over the original - when the original is something I would never in a million years listen to if it hadn't been covered, like Marilyn Manson covering "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by the Eurythmics.
