It's fairly common at least in the Midwest. One method is to dig and when they pour the basement, you pour an additional wall with a door entry and an additional wall under they front porch. Then they'll pour the cap(reinforced with mesh and or extra rebar). This method gives you that cool storage, storm shelter and or vault without losing your interiors basement floor space if you are finishing it. Some people do this under the garage. Some will pour concrete into thick walls on the interior, brace the ceiling and pour that, just under where the floor joists height would be. There are several options for reinforced vault/storm doors. My preference would be a door that swims into the vault. Why? Because if a storm flattens your house, you can still open the door for air, or to dig yourself out. Moisture can be an issue so I advise 2 other things. Install a floor drain so you can run a dehumidifier if needed(for guns mostly). I would make sure there is adequate insulation on any exterior wall or ceiling. I know people who have used the insulated foam forms for the basement walls..you're already insulated, they burn/melt channels into the foam for wiring etc...and they have embedded plastic tabs that drywall and wall coverings can be screwed to,..it's a good option for some. Others choose spray foam, which is what I did. Know what door you're using before hand with dimensions and they'll pour the door opening that size, and then they will just drill and lag bolt the vault door in place. |
