USB devices in Car: What Up With That?

A couple months ago I became a lesbian and bought a 2015 Subaru Outback.

I'm having some problems with USB, and wanted to see if any of you had the same issues in any of your cars. For some reason, the USB won't play music from my Ipod Touch. It recognizes the IPod when it's connected, but never accesses the music to play anything. It's a 16GB IPod touch, maybe four or five years old. This same IPod works just fine in my wife's 2012 Ford Taurus with Ford Sync. I plug it in and it plays perfectly fine. The Outback will not recognize any USB portable drives either. I have a 300GB Seagate USB 2.0 drive (Mac format) and a Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 drive (Windows/Mac), and it won't mount either of them. It doesn't show anything is plugged in.

It will, however, play music from USB thumb drives. I have a 16gb and an 32GB drive that works fine. It fires right up, no problem. So the question is, why will it read a USB thumb drive, but nothing else? Anybody had similar issues, and found a solution?

Bob Dole had one that wouldn't play anything over 160k bitrate, but that was years ago.

Try making a file folder called "Lilith fair" and see if it reads that.

In my car, you have to change a setting in the radio from "radio" to "ipod" or something like that. It'll recognize that something's plugged in, but it'll assume that it's not trying to play music. So I have to fiddle with something in the radio to change the setting.

Actually, I think it automatically switches from "radio" to "something's plugged into the USB". So I change it from "something's plugged into the USB" to "ipod".

My car's a 2011 BMW.

The USB port probably doesn't supply enough juice to power the portable hard drives, but it does for the thumb drive. I do't know about the ipod.

I want to swap out the factory stereo for one with USB. I have all my music on USB drives.

I've noticed they're selling stereos now with no CD player, just SD, USB, AUX input and Bluetooth.

Is it charging when you plug it in? If not, it could be an issue with the cable itself. Apple devices seem rather particular about quality and kind of cable.

Found this comment on a Subaru forum:

Quote:
I really wish I could figure out how to "tell" the Outback audio system that my iPod touch IS NOT A CELL PHONE!! This requires a distracting sequence of audio selections every time I get in the car (telling the OB that my phone is a phone/ipod is for music). The audio system goes into "syncing" the contacts list from my (music only) iPod. Huh? Asked the Apple Help Forum.... it's a Subaru issue.
Also, there is an 8000 song limit on USB (not iPod) so maybe that is the problem with the larger drive. Also, I don't know about the Outback but I've had some aftermarket HUs that won't read more than 32G on the USB port.
