I can't believe Habitat for Humanity and some of the others skim so much money off the top.

Amazing how people try to make a buck off of tragedies isn't it?

I understand a little bit for administrative expenses in getting the aid to the people, but it looks like the majority of that list are keeping too much $ for themselves.

Can't remember which off the top of my head today, but it was either the Red Cross or Salvation Army that took in A LOT of money for the families of the emergency workers that died in the 9/11 attacks, then didn't manage to get the $ to the families.

Obviously there are some charities that abuse the donated dollars, and their boardmembers make mor than I ever will, but before you jump to conclusions I am sure you could contact the organization and get a break down as to what their admin cost go to. For Habitat for Humanity, does that 3% help run their Habitat Restore's retail center and their projects to deconstruct rather than demolish? If so the 3% invested greatly outweighs the benifits of spending the cash.

3%?

They're only passing on 71% of what is donated.

That's ridiculous. I'm sorry I made a donation to them last year.

I am 99% sure it was the Red Cross. I remember seeing a lot of news coverage about that

I really don't trust any charities that are big pseudo-corporations. I like charities like the one Dennis Leary runs out of Boston to help out families of firefighters that died in the line of duty. Back when like 12 firemen died in a big fire in Boston, he raised a bunch of money and took 100% of the money, divided it by 12 and sent each family a check for their twelfth.

I was donating a bunch of stuff to Goodwill recently and they wouldn't take an old bedside table I had because they thought they'd have trouble selling it in their store. It was perfectly functional except the top was scraped up pretty bad, but considering I used cinderblocks as bedside tables in college, it was a perfectly good table. So basically unless they could make a buck selling it, they didn't want it so my stuff will no longer go to them. I'd almost rather throw it in the trash than give it to someone trying to make a profit from it.

When someone donated stuff to the Salvation Army in Rolla that was too shitty to sell, they just put it in the back alley... then, when we were gonna have a party at the fraternity house, we'd take trucks up there an pick up all the old couches and shit for a bonfire. Since they had to pay to have that crap hauled off normally, our drunken, reckless ways were doing some good.... uh, or something.
I thought my house was the only one that used old furniture for bonfires

I also remember a lot of whining about how families of 9/11 victims were receiving multiples of what families of dead soldiers get. Those charities were damned if they did, damned if they didn't.

My point was the misappropriation of the funds that were given. If they were given $ to give to those families, those families should have recieved what was given, not what the organization thinks they deserve.
