Chiefs Offense Rolling Through OTAs\
by Bob Gretz

The progress of the Chiefs offense from last year to this one can be judged by how many times head coach Andy Reid blows his whistle.

The shrill noise signifies the end of the action for each play. Last year, Reid spent a lot of time blowing his whistle before the ball was even snapped. The Chiefs struggled in the early days of learning his version of the west coast offense and at least a half-dozen times per-practice, they were sent back to the huddle to re-group line up correctly and run the play.

During the current OTA sessions that continued Tuesday with an indoor practice at the team’s facility, players running with the first-team offense have given Reid an opportunity to save his breath. Even the No. 2 offense and the new faces on the roster are cruising through practice plan with a minimum amount of pre-snap mental errors involving alignment, movement and motion.

“Everyone is a lot further along in the playbook than we were last year at this time,” said fullback Anthony Sherman. “It makes these practices so much better because everyone is on the same page and knows what to do. We are much improved from last year.”

Over his head coaching career Reid has always put together offensive playbooks built on the foundation of diversity, whether in the run game or the passing attack. He stays pretty true to the west-coast offensive education he received as an assistant coach under Mike Holmgren in Green Bay. The key to the west-coast offense has always been an abundance of options in each game plan.

Reid’s desire to reach deep into the playbook at the start of last season was tempered by the newness of his situation and personnel he found in his first year with the Chiefs. Through the first 10 games on the 2013 schedule, the Chiefs had a 9-1 record, but the offense scored just 18 offensive touchdowns in those 10 games.

As the schedule wore on, the Chiefs offense improved and in the season’s final seven games (including the first-round loss in the playoffs to Indianapolis) the Chiefs offense scored 28 touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Smith and the offense really clicked in that postseason game against the Colts, as they scored five touchdowns and gave the Chiefs a 28-point lead with 28 minutes to play. They ended up losing thanks to a collapse from the Kansas City defense.

As the 2014 offseason program began the offensive coaching staff pushed the theme of picking up where they left off. There was no talk of going back and starting from square one. That has made installation quick and relatively painless.

“The second time around these guys really picked up right where we left off with the Indianapolis game,” said offensive coordinator Doug Pederson. “They understand what we are trying to teach and put in. We’ve focused on the things that we were successful with at the end of last season. They have responded really well.”

They will have to respond quickly when the 2014 season begins. The Chiefs face a much tougher schedule in September and October than they did a year ago. Among their first nine opponents in 2013 only Philadelphia made the playoffs. This year among their first five foes are Denver (September 14), New England (September 29) and San Francisco (October 5).

In Tuesday’s practice the Chiefs offense showed some plays that more than likely would not have been possible last year. Since the end of last season Reid, Pederson and the rest of the offensive coaching staff have been able to add more options to the scheme. Eligible receivers are lining up all over the field, including wide receivers in the backfield and running backs as wide receivers.

Plays in June sometimes never see the light of day in the fall; the off-season is a time for experimentation with plays and personnel. It’s likely that a few of the plays the offense ran Tuesday will be discarded, or moved to the back of the playbook. The fact the coaching staff has the confidence and time to experiment with the offense in June should only help in September, October and beyond.

OTA notes from Tuesday: Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith was charged with driving under the influence after he struck a light pole in downtown Kansas City early Monday morning. Smith was turning at the intersection of 12th and Grand when he swerved and hit the pole. The incident was observed by a Kansas City police officer. Smith was charged with DUI, careless driving and failure to provide proof of insurance. Smith was at the OTA practice on Tuesday, but he was demoted to the No. 2 defense. Marcus Cooper moved to right cornerback and Ron Parker came in and worked at left corner.

There were 81 players participating in the seventh OTA session. Running back DeAnthony Thomas is not allowed to practice because of NFL rules. Outside linebacker Justin Houston and cornerback Brandon Flowers continued their boycott of the option workouts. Wide receiver Junior Hemingway was not taking part on Tuesday. Dealing with injuries and out of the work were wide receivers A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) and Kyle Williams (knee), tight end Travis Kelce (knee), linebacker Ben Johnson (hamstring) and cornerback David Van Dyke (hamstring.) . . . first-round draft pick Dee Ford continues to get significant opportunities with the No. 1 defense at outside linebacker, usually in place of Tamba Hali . . . Tuesday’s version of the No. 1 offensive line was Donald Stephenson at left tackle, Jeff Allen at left guard, Rodney Hudson at center, rookie Zach Fulton at right guard and Jeff Linkenbach at right tackle . . . subbing in on the right side were Rishaw Johnson (guard) and J’Marcus Webb (tackle) . . . very good catches were frequent in the offense coming from tight ends Anthony Fasano and Demetrius Harris and rookie wide receiver Darryl Sargent . . . safety Sanders Commings played the deep middle well and picked off a throw by quarterback Chase Daniel. On the next play, Commings reacted slowly on a throw to his right that was grabbed by Harris.

Kansas City Chiefs OTA report
(highlights)
Mike Catapano looks bigger

Play of the day
Not many spectacular plays out there today but WR Darryl Surgent had a couple of nice grabs. One came from QB Alex Smith, who threw a deep route to the sidelines. The corner in coverage knocked the ball up in the air but Surgent was able to haul it in as he fell to the ground. Another one came from a high pass from QB Tyler Bray where Surgent climbed the ladder to bring it in.

More observations
WR Weston Dressler continues to get looks as a return man. That could be key to him making the roster.

Smith went deep to Dressler on one play but it was just out of reach.

Smith also went deep to WR Frankie Hammond Jr., who dove for the ball but couldn't haul it in.

RB Jamaal Charles vs. S Eric Berry in coverage ... that's a fun one.

TE Demetrius Harris had a fingertip grab over the middle.

WR Albert Wilson, the undrafted free agent, had several nice grabs. He seems a step above some of the other younger players.

No chance unless we end up going light on OL and DL or in the secondary.

Wilson, Dressler, and Hammond are all fighting for the same spot on the roster.

Thomas will make it over McKnight as the 3rd back provided McKnight doesn't just completely outplay him in camp on both offense and special teams.

I guess Dressler should be able to clear waivers since he was just sitting in that other league.

I wonder whats better to be the star of CFL or practice squad NFL player

ILB Joe Mays impressed with OLB Dee Ford
by Herbie Teope
(highlights)

OTA observations:

• Cornerback Ron Parker ran with the first-team defense during 11-on-11 drills. He lined up on the left side, with Marcus Cooper shifting to the right side in place of Sean Smith. Parker ran with the first-team defense on Day Six during Smith’s absence. Smith ran with the second-team on Day Seven. [Note: Smith was arrested, cited with DUI early Monday morning]

• With cornerback Chris Owens leaving the field during the workouts, free safety Malcolm Bronson spent a lot of time defending the slot in place of Owens.

• In what is now virtually a daily occurrence, tight end Demetrius Harris update made a nice play after getting behind cornerback Marcus Cooper on a corner route to haul in an over-the-shoulder catch from quarterback Tyler Bray.

• Undrafted free agent wide receiver Darryl Surgent was on the receiving end of two nice plays. The first play came deep down the field against cornerback Vernon Kearney, who had tight coverage. Kearney appeared to disrupt the pass, getting a hand on the ball and tipping it. But Surgent showed excellent concentration to haul in the pass as he landed on his back. The second attention-grabbing reception came later when Surgent flashed across the middle of the field and made a leaping grab in front of free safety Malcolm Bronson

• Undrafted free agent strong safety Daniel Sorensen drew a thumbs up from defensive back coach Emmitt Thomas during an 11-on-11 drill. Wide receiver Weston Dressler lined up in the slot with Sorensen covering. The former BYU Cougar stayed with the quick receiver across the field. The play went to the other side, but Sorensen showed some good quickness of his own, drawing the approving sign from Thomas.

• Free safety Sanders Commings displayed good ball hawking skills on a deep pass during 11-on-11 drills. Commings came across the field to intercept a quarterback Tyler Bray down the right sideline intended for wide receiver Darryl Surgent.

• The shuffling on the right side of the offense line continues, as expected, considering left tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder) isn’t participating in team-related 9-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills. With Donald Stephenson moving to Fisher’s spot, the Chiefs rotated Rishaw Johnson at guard with Zach Fulton and J’Marcus Webb at tackle with Jeff Linkenbach. Rokevious Watkins also saw time at right guard with the second unit during 11-on-11.

• Sixth-round draft pick, offensive tackle Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, lined up at left guard with the second-team unit during the second set of 11-on-11 drills.

• Quarterback Alex Smith threw a nice over the shoulder pass to a streaking Weston Dressler out of the slot against Malcolm Bronson, but Dressler dropped the ball after extending and hitting the ground.

• Recently signed wide receiver Deon Anthony wears No. 4 and cornerback Justin Rogers wears No. 44.

Bowe
Avery
Jenkins
Hemingway
Dressler
Wilson

Odd man out: (perhaps makes the PS??)
Hammond

Honestly, unless a couple of these players surprise people and exceed expectations, this is a list of a big bag of shit. It's no wonder we're over-utilizing Charles and our TE's. Our WR's are dogshit outside of Bowe, and even he has problems (case of the drop-sies) at times throughout his career. The Emmanuel Sanders fallout is going to bite us in the ass this season. I'm not saying we would win the SB w/ him, but not having him leaves the cupboard bare except with a bunch of unproven nobodies and never will be(s). I have some hope for Dressler just because he's had professional experience, even if it's w/ the CFL. Wilson seems a little promising. But let's be honest, it's a long shot for either of them to become reliable contributors come week1. Hemingway has good hands but he's not scaring anyone on opposing defenses. He's just a role player, more utilized in the ST game than on the offense. Avery should be cut, and coaches seem to think Jenkins is an up'n'coming/ascending player. I'm not ready to jump on board on that train just yet. 1st rd WR's aren't supposed to be as raw as he is..not in his 3rd year into the league. He had 1 okay game (@Chargers '13) where he had like 70yds receiving, where 50yds of that was on 1 reception. Let's just hope the coaches are right in this aspect. Because the Chiefs need all the help they can get at the WR position.

I know one thing's for sure. The Chiefs sure as hell could use WR-Dorial Green-Beckham in next year's draft, despite his troubles. His troubles could allow the Chiefs to select him as a huge value pick/steal in rd 2-3. Talent is desperately needed at the WR position on this team. KC can't ignore this position like they have in the past when they've relied on HOF TE Tony Gonzalez. KC needs someone to compliment Dwayne Bowe. KC failed to do that this season. They passed on a great value pick in the 3rd rd in Keenan Allen last season, and missed out on FA's Maclin and Sanders this season. The team needs DGB, someone w/ legit #1 capability. Then once he gets his feet wet in the NFL, then you start thinking about trading/releasing Dwayne Bowe to save cap space.

I dont think Sanders offers much that Avery doesn't.

It seems like this team has been rolling the dice on random slot WR's in OTA/TC for quite a few years now. I think its time one sticks.

The only Sanders on the chiefs roster is Sanders Commings who is a DB. Since he plays an entirely different position, I do believe he does offer something different than Avery who is a WR.
