CHIEFS PLACE THREE-TIME PRO BOWL RB PRIEST HOLMES ON INJURED RESERVE

Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Wednesday that the club has placed RB Priest Holmes on the Reserve/Injured List.

Holmes (5-9, 213) ranks first in Chiefs history with 5,933 rushing yards, 1,275 rushing attempts, 76 rushing TDs and 83 total TDs. He has played in 109 career regular season games (80 starts) with Baltimore (’97-00) and Kansas City (2001-05), carrying the ball 1,734 times for 8,035 yards (4.6 avg.) with 86 TDs and has caught 334 passes for 2,945 yards (8.8 avg.) with eight scores. In seven starts with the Chiefs this season, Holmes carried the ball 119 times for 451 yards (3.8 avg.) with six TDs. He also caught 21 passes for 197 yards (9.4 avg.) with a TD.
“We’re disappointed to announce that we’re placing Priest Holmes on injured reserve today,” Peterson stated. “This decision was made based on the advice of our medical staff and two expert outside medical consultants. The consensus was that Priest should cease to have physical contact for a minimum of 30 days and will then be re-evaluated. Our head team orthopedic physician, Dr. Jon Browne has a statement that follows in regards to Priest’s specific medical condition.
“At this time, we consider this not to be a career-ending injury. The doctors have indicated that Priest’s condition will improve by refraining from contact. As always, the health and well-being of our players is our utmost concern. Priest is a marvelously-talented performer and has been an extremely productive player as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.”
Chiefs head orthopedic physician Dr. Jon Browne stated: “No permanent damage has occurred either to the head or neck and no surgical intervention is contemplated. It is the collective recommendation of Dr. Robert Watkins, orthopedic spine specialist in Los Angeles, Dr. Barth Green, neurosurgeon in Miami and myself, head orthopedic physician for the Kansas City Chiefs, that further contact activity involving the head or neck should be avoided for now. Priest will be re-evaluated in one month.”
“After Priest sustained a hip injury in 2002 and a knee injury last season, there were numerous individuals who speculated that those injuries were career-threatening,” Peterson continued. “Of course, we know those reports were proven wrong. In fact, Priest rebounded from his hip injury stronger than ever and responded by setting an NFL single-season record with 27 rushing touchdowns in 2003. One should never doubt the resiliency of Priest Holmes.
“We fully expect that Larry Johnson will once again perform admirably in place of Priest, much like he did at the end of last season. Priest will continue to attend meetings and conduct his rehabilitation here in Kansas City. We fully anticipate that despite his absence on the field, Priest will continue to contribute to the success of Larry and our other running backs, as well as our entire football team. These are never easy decisions, but we believe this is the correct one for Priest at this time.”
Since the start of the 2001 season, Holmes leads the NFL with 76 rushing TDs. Over that span, the three-time Pro Bowler trails only San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson (9,020) with 8,293 yards from scrimmage and is second in the NFL behind Seattle’s RB Shaun Alexander (84) with 83 total TDs. Holmes has also seen duty in five playoff contests (two starts), rushing 42 times for 221 yards (5.3 avg.) with two TDs and was part of Baltimore’s squad that captured a victory in Super Bowl XXXV. The San Antonio, Texas prep product entered the league as a rookie free agent with Baltimore before signing with the Chiefs as an unrestricted free agent in 2001. Holmes attended Marshall High School in San Antonio and concluded his career at the University of Texas with 252 carries for 1,276 yards (5.1 avg.) with 20 TDs.
