Pipedream thought: Trade down possibility?

I know the majority of teams usually have their interests best served by trading down as long as the deal is right. Certainly that's the case for the Chiefs, where we simply need more draft picks more than we need a higher draft slot.

The 49ers have a billion draft picks. It's also becoming apparent in mock drafts that they are potentially interested in selecting one of the top WRs in this excellent class for the position. If they wait, a fairly decent one may fall to them. So what if there's a rush on the position? Or if some of the teams decide to let top guys like Mike Evans fall because they know they can just draft somebody of pretty good quality in later rounds? It would behoove the 49ers to trade up so they can get the guy that they want.

Let's say they trade up from 30 to our spot at 23.

In return, we get our 2nd round pick back that we farted away in the Alex trade. And then we'll throw them a 6th rounder or something. Maybe we'll need to give more back like a 2015 midrounder.

Am I smoking crack? As difficult as it is to predict trade ups and trade downs, I won't ask for the chances of this happening. But... is it plausible? Can I at least dream about it?

This franchise has never shown the ability to move and deal in the draft. I doubt that changes this year.

Yeah man I wish they could of moved down and used that pick they received as compensation for a bad-ass pass rusher. ****ing Chiefs.

That's one case. When we got Pioli and Dorsey from New England and Green Bay we believed they would be able to wheel and deal in the draft because that's how it worked with their previous franchise. This team still has rarely shown the ability to trade up or down to get what they needed.

Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr said Friday four or five teams have told him they would like to trade into the 20s of the first round to draft him.

If the chiefs are wanting to trade down, they should be able to find a trade partner either for a QB or someone else. Historically, picks near the bottom third of the first round have been the most likely to be traded.

If they are going to get trade offers, it's most likely going to be for someone like Brandin Cooks or Jimmie Ward.

The thing is, do the Chiefs want to pass on someone like and pick up a couple extra picks or do they take a guy like that who will obviously improve a known position of weakness on the team?

My dark horse team to trade with KC is actually Carolina. Followed by New England and Seattle.

The two teams behind KC, Cincinnati and San Diego, both need cornerbacks and defensive tackles.

Carolina and Seattle could both use CB help, Carolina especially. Seattle would likely get by with starting Maxwell, but if Kyle Fuller is sitting there, they might be tempted to jump up the board too.

New England, while they don't often move up in round one, might be looking at coming up and getting Louis Nix if they feel like they need to replace Wilfork. That of course, providing that Nix makes it that far.

I don't see too many other possibilities for a team to come up to our spot.

I don't think Carolina is a likely candidate. They're going to need all the picks they have considering the extremely dire cap situation.

They have 14 million in dead money this season, next year they'll be fine. All they have to worry about this year is fitting the rookies they do draft into the cap.

If they cut Charles Godfrey and Mike Tolbert, two guys they should cut, then they'll clear up 3.4 million yet this year which would give them 6 million to sign rookies.

I don't see a problem making it work.

It really depends how much you think the cap will increase next year.

They're gonna have to burden their future cap (or do some releasing) to make space to sign their current picks as it is and they have a big contract looming for Greg Hardy after 2014. On top of that, they'd be wise to lock Cam Newton up for the long term.

Spoiler!

I still say this draft is a fail if we don't trade down ,rest assured some team will grab who ever the front office has targeted at 23.

If this is the best looking draft in 20 plus years need to load up somehow.

easier said than done

In a previous life during martyball days we'd prefer to trade away our 2nd round picks to avoid the next William Bartees of the world being drafted! Now the whole freaking world is over cause we traded 2 2nds for a competent QB, vs spending 1 2nd on a qb bust and another top10 pick.

There are several players i'd love to have @23, but if ever there is a draft to move back, get an extra 3rd and 4th, or maybe we do hit somebody who really needs it, to move down and snag a 2nd, this is the deep draft class to do it.

Just don't know if there is one guy worth more than extra picks this year.

I think the most likely scenario for a trade down is for Carr. Lots of teams need a QB. I think the Jags could make an interesting trade partner.
