Hypothetical: Trading a superstar before the Super Bowl.

Here's the situation. Imagine that there's no trade deadline, and that the Chiefs are on a roll heading into the playoffs. We're 15-1, and we're led by a superstar running back. For situational purposes, his name is Jerry Lonson, and he averaged 5.3 yards a carry running for 2,006 yards this season. He's 25 years old, and he's a team player.

A team that is 1-15 and obviously not a playoff contender comes to us the week before the playoffs and wants to acquire Jerry in exchange for draft picks.

In that situation, what would it take for you to trade away Jerry Lonson? You're taking a huge hit going into the playoffs, but you can really stock up on picks.

Would it take 2 #1s? 3 #1s? 4 complete drafts? Every pick from every draft for the rest of time? I'm presuming that there's some theoretical price at which you would give up Jerry in that situation, but what would it be?

No. It would take their first rounder for the next 10 yrs, and then it still wouldn't work because Carl would never be able to get all those guys under contract.

So most of you guys wouldn't sacrifice a star before the playoffs for 10 first-round picks? That's a lot of first-round picks.

We were very spoiled in the 90's, going to the playoffs about every yr for a decade rarely happens for any team. So I think once you get there, if anything you should load up for a playoff run like in MLB, but the trade deadline is much earlier in the NFL.

I'd have to do the 10 years worth of picks no question. Now if you guarantee that we lose the SB without the RB then I'll have to think a bit first. Also I'd offer him for the bargain price of 7 1st rounders after the game.

Dave

I don't think your proposal is feasible. The trade deadline is week six. So at best your team would be 6-0 and we all know what happened the last time the Chiefs were 6-0.

Not with Carl as the GM.
