Father lets 8 year-old girl cry through 40 minutes of Batman movie

Our department took a field trip today to see the Dark Night movie, I arrived late so I had a seat by myself in the last row of the theater.

About 2/3 through the film after one of the huge explosion/demolition scenes, this little girl about 8 years old starts crying to her dad "Daddy I don't like this."

She then cried, sobbing and shaking and sniffing uncontrollably into his armpit for the final 40 minutes of the movie. He shooshed her and patted her back a lot, but never considered leaving.

I sat there in rage NOT because the girl was making noise, but because her idiot dad wouldn't realize that the poor girl was in hell and he was too selfish to take her out of there.

I tried to get his attention a couple times, but didn't want to start a scene in the middle of the film. It was like witnessing abuse. It really F'd me up.

After the movie ended I lost him in the crowd but finally caught him outside and stopped him and away from his kids I calmly said,

"Was it worth it? Did you really have to see the rest of the movie? Did you have to put your daughter through hell because you wanted to see the rest that bad?"

"well, if I knew she was going to cry I would not have brought her.."

"Yeah, but once she's sitting there crying, take her out of there. That was a bad movie for kids. It's not worth it. It's never worth letting your kid suffer. You owe her an apology, and you'd better do whatever she wants for the rest of the weekend because you need to fix this and let her know she's important because she's gonna have nightmares about this. You're a better dad than that...be better, okay?"

I was really, really, angry about it. I guess hearing kids in pain and people doing nothing about it is about one of the most upsetting things for me.

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. My dad took me to Dawn of the Dead when I was 9 and I had nightmares for 4 years. So, maybe I have a personal connection to this.

It just really changes my perspective about what I'll do when my kids "inconvenience me." I've shooed them out of the room during football when I could have just paused it and taken five minutes to interact with them and catch back up while the team loses. It isn't worth it.

Kids only get one chance to grow up.

Sounds like they were giving their children a head start.

You were certainly much more polite than I would have been.

I would have asked the parent to leave and if he didn't comply, I would have gone immediately to the manager and explained the situation. Even though I'd miss part of the movie, it would save that girl the torture of sitting through a movie that she obviously couldn't handle watching.

Not only was a the experience bad for the 8 year-old, it couldn't have been too great for the other 300 paying customers. Hearing a child cry is devastating to most.

Plus, what kind of jack-off brings an 8 year-old girl to a PG-13 movie?

You did a good thing, Broheim.

So if this prick is sitting next to you with his screaming whining kid ruining your movie experience, do you just sit there and think it's cute?

I see most people being happy someone spoke up about kids misbehaving in a theater
and not the selfrightous condescending tone

He's going to regret this in another ten years when she's spinning on a pole somewhere under the name "Darka Nightly".

You make a well reasoned point. Thank you for that.

However, I think it all depends on the presentation. If he had a snide tone then you may have a point but if TE approached it as a man to man discussion then it was well done.

I don't think anybody knows of the presentation except those who were there so I'm looking for the silver lining here, something I think everybody should try once in a while.

Based on the guys reaction to TE I would bet that it was a civil discussion. I don't, for the life of me, understand why people bring kids to a movie they can't handle and shouldn't be watching. But to just sit there and let her cry is a horrible thing to do for the child and the other patrons of the event. If I had been sitting next to him I would have been having a chat with him as well.
