Let's talk Secondary

Is there any question this unit has the most questions?

In looking at our roster and some depth charts out there seems these CBs have best shot at finding playing time

Steven Nelson (5'-11, 194, Age 25) - 3rd in '15
Keith Reaser (6'-0, 190, 26) - 5th in '14 by SF
Kendall Fuller (5'-11, 198, 23) - 3rd in '16 by Was
David Amerson (6'-1, 205, 26) - 2nd in '13 by Was
Will Redmond (6'0, 186, 24) - 3rd in '16 by SF

Probably more relegated to special teams duty if they make the team?

Tremon Smith (6'-0, 190, 21) - 6th in '18
Ashton Lampkin (6'-0, 189, 24) - UDFA in '17
Makinton Dorleant (5'-11, 185, 25) - UDFA in '16
Arrion Springs (6'-0, 205, 22) - UDFA in '18
D'Montre Wade (6'-0, 200, 23) - UDFA in '18

Free safety I'm seeing:

1. Leon McQuay (6'-1, 195, 23) - 6th in '17
2. Robert Golden (5'-11, 202, 27) - UDFA in '12, first 6 yrs w/ Pit
3. Armani Watts (5'-11, 205, 22) - 4th in '18
4. Jordan Sterns (5'-11, 198, 24) - UDFA in '17

and SS...

1. Eric Berry (6'-0, 212, 29) - 1st in '10
2. Daniel Sorensen (6'-2, 208, 28) - UDFA in '14
3. Eric Murray (5'-11, 199, 24) - 4th in '16
4. Step Durham (5'-11, 194, 23) - UDFA in '18

The pass rush is truly the big unknown this year for sure. Will Ford be at least respectable? Will Berry ball like he did in 16? Will Fuller ball like he did in Washington? Will Houston be allowed to rush more than be in coverage? Will Tanoh break out ? Will Jones finally produce a consistent steady disruptive motor? Will this years defensive draft picks be able to produce ?

I trust the pass rush to be good. The secondary not so much. I feel confident in having Fuller as a #1 CB, Nelson as a #3 CB but I see Amerson as a #4CB, meaning a guy who could be good enough to start but you are not sure. Now where is the #2 CB.

It's bad. The end.

But it's all good if we score 30+ a game.

See years 02-05. It wasn't good enough then either. We need a defense that is at least respectable IMHO.

Lol, we have Eric Berry and Kendall Fuller

The secondary we brought to Oakland last year was far worse. The only good player on that unit was Peters

I'm not sure it's even the worst secondary of the last two years, not counting the few minutes Berry played to start last season. Even without Peters.

They'll look better if there's a pass rush. Just like every other group of db's everywhere. I'm just not sure there'll be a pass rush.

Sorensen will be gone. Berry is hungry and the young defense will feed off him and houstons energy, especially without negative attitude peters. The pass rush/front 7 will be key to success of the secondary

Our defense is gonna be much better this year. Veach drafted defense to get faster. Ragland and Hitchins are going to make a huge difference. Our secondary is hungry.

And sorenson isn't going anywhere.

Here's my bold predictions...

Berry and Sorensen will start at safety.
Fuller and Amerson will start at CB.
Nelson and O'Daniel will play NB dependent upon the situation.

Assuming the Chiefs keep 10 DBs... I'd think the following:

CB Fuller, Amerson, Nelson, Redmond, Smith
S Berry, Sorensen, McQuay, Watts, Murray

They stash on the PS CBs Lampkin and Wade

Veach needs another CB. Maybe he pulls the trigger in the Supplemental Draft. The thing is, we gave up a 4th Round pick for Ragland in the 2019 Draft. That being said, I won't be surprised if Veach claws back a draft pick or two trading some of guys before the season starts. We're vulnerable in the secondary and at C.

I think it's a pretty safe bet you're right on this.

Now we might have someone other than Houston step up this year and provide a respectable pass rush. Solid pass rush helps hide a mediocre secondary.

Also having Berry back will be a huge help to a suspect secondary...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).
