Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 21, 2013, 6:46 PM EDT
Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

"no Qb could perform behind this line"

"we need to replace LG and C and let joeckel develop, then Alex will have a chance"

"trade Bowe he drops too much"

I agree, but the reason people are pissy about the pick is that they're passing on Geno, more than it is that we're trading Albert.

I'm not a fan of passing on Geno. But it's possible the Chiefs don't think he's good because maybe he isn't, or maybe they see a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round they like (this QB class has quite a few good ones in that range). If they end up getting a QB who ends up being better than Geno, then whomever we pick at 1.1 matters a lot less. We're turning this conversation into being about Albert, but let's be real here. The conversation is really about people who don't want to pass on a QB.

I won't be AS pissy if we take Dion Jordan.

But that's still not a very good pick, because we already have two near-elite pass rushers, and Dion Jordan is incredibly iffy as a #1 pick.

This team doesn't really have any holes outside QB.

The pick should be a god damn ****ing QB or a trade down.

And **** anyone who says otherwise, including my female relatives.

For most here, sure. I'm not tied to Geno. I wouldn't mind taking him, but at this oint it doesn't matter. He's probably a mid-late first round pick in a normal year. But these LT's are supposed to be franchise caliber top 5 players at their position.

I don't really care either about trading Albert. But it you are going to trade him, you best be sure the guy you are about to spend the top overall pick in the draft on is a major upgrade.

Otherwise, IMO, it's a marginal good deal, with only monetary factors being a positive.

We trade Albert for their first second rounder, take Joeckel at 1, he becomes Joe Thomas 2.0. We use the Albert money to sign Richard Seymour.

We take EJ Manuel or Tyler Wilson withe the second rounder.

THats the best way this could work out.

I think we should use the Albert money to buy hookers and cocaine, because that's going to result in a lot more pleasure than anything the Chiefs do with Alex Smith at QB.

Second round quarterbacks are horrible, you be better served drafting another position.

Meh, I view that as somewhat true, but it's like the odds on a coin flip. Each flip has different odds. Each draft is different.

Kaepernick was a 2nd rounder, maybe EJ can be Reids Kaep? I don't know, looking for a positive.

I'd be very happy if we found a way to get any of these guys:

EJ Manuel
Matt Barkley
Geno Smith
Tyler Wilson
Mike Glennon

I think all of those guys could be good if they were able to sit and learn for a year or two.

Wut?

Unless it is a weighted coin, the odds of either heads or tails on any given flip of the coin is always .50.
