Colts safety Bob Sanders wins NFL Defensive Player award

"Sanders did enough to earn 31 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. That was particularly impressive because it was a strong season for individual defensive performances.

Yet next closest in the balloting were Seattle end Patrick Kerney and Tennessee tackle Albert Haynesworth with four votes each.

Also receiving votes were defensive back Antonio Cromartie of San Diego with three; linebackers Mike Vrabel of New England and DeMarcus Ware of Dallas (2); and cornerback Ronde Barber of Tampa Bay, linebacker James Harrison of Pittsburgh, rookie linebacker Patrick Willis of San Francisco, and end Mario Williams of Houston, each with one vote."

He may not have had any "big numbers" in sacks and the like, but he was far more consistent than Allen at least. I like JA, and want to see us lock him up for the long haul; he's a great pass rusher, but he does have a tendency to get taken out in the run game at times...

Though if he was eligible, he does deserve at least some votes...

I think IIRC that the NFL policy for the POY awards was changed this last year because of the "roidman" Merriman backlash. If a player is suspended they are not eligible for the POY awards.

That was just for the Pro Bowl I thought.

Not to mention, the colts are totally different teams on defense with Sanders or without.

I think he fits the definition of 'most valuable player' to their team.

The Colts last year, without Bob Sanders, awful against the run..and really not very good defensively.

This year, with a healthy Bob Sanders, they were great against the run and really might have been the best defensive team in the NFL.

Sometimes stats don't paint the whole picture. Sanders is awesome against the run and above average against the pass.

Last year, with a healthy Jordan Black, the Chiefs made the playoffs.

This year, Jordan Black was gone, and we only won four games.

In a year where there were really no overly dominant defensive performances, Bob Sanders is a deserving winner.

Safety is completely different than Defensive end..Did teams double team Sanders damn near every play? Don't think so

It's a position where you can be exposed.....ask Bernard Pollard...or that guy from the Steelers who ran his mouth...if you make a mistake as a DB everyone sees it.
