Dallas signs OT to 8 yr/109 million extension
Dallas Cowboys LT Tyron Smith signs eight-year contract extension, deal worth $109 million
By Rainer Sabin rsabin@dallasnews.com 12:58 pm on July 30, 2014 | Permalink OXNARD, Calif. — Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith signed an eight-year contract extension that will keep him in Dallas through 2023. The total value of the deal is worth $109 million with $40 million guaranteed, sources said Wednesday. Smith will make $32 million in the first three years of the new contract. The former ninth-overall pick of the 2011 draft, Smith made the Pro Bowl last season. In May, the Cowboys picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. Before Tuesday’s news dropped, Smith’s 2015 salary was to be fully guaranteed for $10.039 million, which is equal to the 2014 transition tag for offensive linemen. Smith was set to make a base salary of $2.079 million in 2014. Smith, 23, is the foundation of the Cowboys’ rebuilt offensive line. He has started all 47 games in which he has played and has conceded only 14 sacks in his career, according to STATS LLC. The Cowboys made it known they were to complete a contract extension with Smith in 2014. Now they will turn their attention to lengthening receiver Dez Bryant’s deal. He is scheduled to become a free agent in 2015. Because of his youth, solid work ethic and consistency protecting Tony Romo’s blindside, Smith became a valuable piece that Cowboys management felt could be an asset to the team for more than a decade. On Wednesday, Dallas committed to a future with Smith as its left tackle. |

Tyron Smith is actually really good. He's super athletic for a lineman and on top of that..he's only 23.
When you have a 23 year old LT who made the probowl giving up 1 sack and 1 hold all season..you have to pay him. I'm sure they think he's going to be the best LT in the league quickly. |

Man the cowboys are ****ed lol. Had to let there best player go, signing an insane deal for smith. Dez coming up for his pay day. They were depending on rookie Demarcus Lawrence for a pass rush and he broke his foot, Sean lee tore his acl. Murray is made of glass, witten is getting old. Things could not be worse for them.

That is actually a smart move on Jerry's part. Smith is young and a total stud at left tackle. Cowboys have him signed until he is 31 now.

He's a good player, but that's a lot of money to tie up in a single lineman.

NFL contracts suck. Less than 40% of a contract is guaranteed. Ridiculous.

Because if he hit free agency he's have got paid fat and likely would have left Dallas. Sound like a lot, but worth it for a guy who isn't injury prone, and is a very good lineman.
