Actress Ellen Page publicly came out as gay Friday evening, while giving a speech at Time to THRIVE, a national LGBTQ youth conference held in Las Vegas.

"I'm here today because I am gay," Page told the assembled crowd, which responded with a standing ovation and a long chorus of cheers.

"Whoo!" said Page, before continuing:

"And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.

I also do it selfishly because I'm tired of hiding and I'm tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered, and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today with all of you on the other side of that pain."

Page is most famous for becoming pregnant by her awkward classmate Michael Cera, and for invading the dreams of a stranger alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, neither of which happened in real life, because she is an actress.

After her speech, the Human Rights Campaign, which organized the conference, congratulated Page on the front page of its website for "her brave decision to live openly and authentically."

First off, please realize, I offer this to answer the question you posed. Not to start an argument or evangelize. In case I haven't actually stated this 1000 times here already over the years. That said.

There is not a millisecond of a black person's life, absent substantial pancake makeup, that they will not be black. No matter how educated, restrained in behavior, method in acting style, heck they could be sleeping in the Queen of England's bed.

That is an immutable law of physics and it's subset optics. Their skin reflects light at a given frequency, and we have attached baggage to that reflection.

OTOH, no matter how immutable one's desires are, expression of them is an act. And for many, observation of that act triggers a primal reaction, . . . lets be polite and term it 'douche chills.' Your grandma might have hypothesized that a goose walked over your future grave at that moment.

On subsequent reasoned reflection, you might realize that 'oh, that was my lizard brain saying HEY! THEY AREN'T DOING THAT TO FURTHER THE SPECIES!.' You might feel all sorts of appropriate shame for allowing said lizard brain primacy in the moment. But in that moment, that was your mind telling you how evolution wants you to react.

FTR - and I've said before, to the extent I personally have that reaction, it's not all that different from my reaction to seeing Roseanne Barr and a fat mulleted Tom Arnold smooching.

This is an interesting answer. Through this prism, then, isn't condemning homosexual behavior identical in scope and severity to condemning masturbation, eating religiously unapproved foods, wearing unapproved clothing, and using unapproved language?

Race can easily be seen as a biological abnormality that transcends sexual orientation.

I just don't see how it's any different to disapprove of someone being homosexual and disapproving of someone being a racial minority. It's escaping me.
