Is it time to go back to the 4-3?

With Hali coming to the end of his career along with DJ, if he comes back, DeVito is getting up there as well, isn't he(?), we seem to be losing the players we need to run a 3-4.

Can Dee Ford play DE in a 4-3?
Can Houston move to a 4-3 OLB ala Von Douche?
Poe on the inside of a 4-3 could be awesome, yes?

What say you all???

FTR, I prefer the 3-4 if you have the people who can play in it. But I don't think we do.

Whatever dude. I'm just responding to the OP. We are going to be transitioning in defense this off-season for salary cap reasons if nothing else. Health reasons possibly too when you factor in DJ and Berry.

Since I have a different opinion than you, that automatically make me a dumbass. I get it!

Which is why I don't think we have the LB Corp to play a 3-4 anymore. Houston at OLB and DJ MLB. Even if you keep Hali he can play DE. Having said that, I think we are too thin on talent at the LB position and a 4-3 would be easier going on Poe, imo.

I ****ing hate the 3-4. Never wanted to switch to it 2009. But we are built to run it so it would be silly to switch over now.

I like it only because I like blitzing LB's. Maybe I got spoiled watching DT? Anyhow, I don't know that we are built to run it like we think.

I think not allowing Poe to blow the gaps is costing us. I watched Denver last night and their D-line was shedding blocks and getting in the backfield. Our line eats or tries to eat up blocks instead. I'd just like to see Poe turned loose more.

I think we could run a decent 4-3 might be able to stop a run or two as well.

I do too.

when it works, it's great. I just think with so many teams running the 3-4 or some variant, the talent pool for those players is smaller now. and it's hard to get the right personnel.

there are only so many human beings built for that.

the 3-4 is in my irrational hatred list.

.. and this is why for me, a 4-3 Under would be wicked and effective for both Poe and Ford lined up as RDT and RE. Both would have more 1 on 1 blocks to deal with, and could abuse their OL in pass rush. Add in Houston and Bailey at SLB and LDE, and you will have frightened QBs.

The area of concern is to the run D.. though maybe having both Mays and DJ as the other LBs could work well, so long as the weakside one makes sure he can help Ford's side.

I don't think it's irrational at all. Poe is wasted on a 3-4 .

Poe is the only damn reason we should stay in the 3-4. He is what you want in a nose tackle.

Yes but we don't have a lot of the other pieces for a 3-4, imo. Poe would beast in any defense, I think this we know.

All we're really missing from a 3-4 defense is ILBs and that's only because DJ is hurt. We have a bunch of pieces for a 3-4 defense.

Poe is big. Poe is quick.

A nose's job is to eat up blockers and let the linebackers make plays. You put him in a situation where he's in a 4-3 with a decent DE next to him and pressure coming from the linebackers as well we'll be a dominant defense.

I never called you a dumbass, just asked you how would you fit our pieces into a even scheme. Sutton isn't changing fronts, and we aren't transitioning over unless we land some serious studs at both DE and the mike. People like throwing out ideas without really thinking them through or explaining why they think its a good idea. No reason to get your panties in a bunch.

i think poe would be a beast in a 3 tech, but we don't have any 4-3 backers on the roster right now. DJ will do well at mike but they still need a serviceable sam & will. Houston would be wasted talent there IMO as his talents are best at rushing the passer, not in coverage.

Your thinking of Romeo's 2 gap system. Sutton runs a 1 gap system. Our Dline isn't trying to 'eat up blocks', their job is gap control and if they draw a double team even better.. then someone else is unblocked.

And DJ may not be coming back and if he does he may not be the DJ we knew. Same with Devito. I like the idea of letting Poe and Bailey get after the QB moreso than they would in a 3-4.
