not necessarily. guy on first advances to third because of a throwing error on a hit, the run is still earned if the next guy hits a home run. The question is, had the catcher's interference not happened, do we assume he would have been out, or are we assuming nothing and saying an error let him advance one base (to first)

Had he not hit the ball he is only awarded 1st base. It was a dead ball once interference was called. I think the earned vs unearned run depends on how the inning plays out.

ya, if I had to make a guess on it, I'd have reached the same conclusion (advance to first, no implied outs wiped off the board).

I was just explaining to him a situation where an error doesnt lead to unearned runs.
