Obviously RGIII hasn't played a down yet, so I don't know how you're so sure that he's a bust already, anyway, two 1sts and a 2nd is nothing for a potential decade of elite QB play. |

What really irks me is how the media says the Skins gave up THREE 1st round picks for RGIII. No!!! The Skins and the Rams SWAPPED 1st round picks this year...so the Skins still have their 1st rounder for 2012. They gave up their next 2 first rounders in 2013 and 2014...so it's really only 2...plus a 2nd round pick. The media just loves to gloss that over for the dramatic effect.

They DID give up three firsts. Do they still have their #6 overall or not? No. So could they have given up the other two firsts and the 2nd and still made the deal? No. So it took THREE FIRSTS to made the trade happen. Quote:
It's like you guys don't get it. These big huge trades don't work. If they did, people would do them more often. The skins have egg on their face by everyone in this deal for a reason. |

they swapped the 6th pick for the 2nd pick to get RGIII. That number 2 pick still counts as a 1st rounder. they lost the 6th..but gained the 2nd...no?

The Redskins threw down the gauntlet Friday night when they sent the Rams three first-rounders (the sixth-overall pick in 2012, and one each in '13 and '14), a 2012 second-rounder, as well as additional picks in exchange for the second-overall selection in April's draft. That means you can't get #2 with giving up #6, 2 other firsts, and a second, and additional picks. It's not a "swap of picks" because the Rams just wanted to trade down. In instances yes, it's a swap. This is not. It's a package deal. |

Yes, you are correct. They swapped picks this year with the Skins getting the better part of the deal this year.

Also a lot of times the team that is in position to trade down actually needs the player, see Cam last year and the Panthers. See the Colts this year with Luck. It just so happens that this year there are 2 elite QB's available and the 2nd pick is a team that doesn't really need a rookie QB right now.

technically..we are both correct. I personally would only say the skins gave up 3 1st rounders if they were not drafting in the 1st round at all. Yes they gave up the pick...but they will have RGIII at #2. They could give a rats aSSSS about the 6th pick at that point. It's throwing in the 2 other 1st rounders that make the media spluge....but saying its 3.

That's a hefty compensation. But it's different with a draft pick that high because: 1) elite QBs don't enter free agency unless they're old or damaged goods; 2) You get the opportunity to develop a QB for 10+ years if he pans out. You can't use standard price tags when talking about QBs because apart from the draft, it is extremely difficult to find a franchise QB who can help you compete in the long-term. |

I have to agree, to an extent, with The Guardian.
For the Redskins, given their lack of talent and their inability at this point to bring in free agents that can help to alleviate the growing process for RGIII, this might well turn out poorly. Rookie QB's confidence can be damaged if they have no support, and some never recover. Jim Plunket was one of the best college QBs I ever saw, and his upside was equal to that of Luck's, but he busted hard, because he went to a terrible team, and it took him 10 years to recover.
