Shields a friendly reminder of how great Carl Peterson was
Drafted Will Shields, Tony Gonzalez, Derrick Thomas, Jamaal Charles, Tim Grunhard, Larry Johnson, Jared Allen, Dave Szott, Donnie Edwards, John Tait, Dale Carter, Greg Wesley, Dwayne Bowe, Derrick Johnson, Jerome Woods, Reggie Tongue, Jerry Ostroski, Joe Horn, Jay Leeuwenberg, Brandon Flowers, Branden Albert, and Tamba Hali. Also picks up future hall of famers Joe Montana, Willie Roaf, and Marcus Allen. Oh, and there was that Priest Holmes guy.

As a non-Chiefs fan, I can appreciate a good general manager who contributes to the league the way Carl Peterson did. He was a solid GM who was thrown out coming off a slam dunk 2008 draft and replaced with Scott Egoli.

We light a candle for you this week King Carl, knowing you're reading somewhere.

Peterson's drafting seemed to vary depending on his coaches, which indicates to me that the coaches had a lot of say in who was drafted. His best drafting was during the Schottenheimer years, then was awful during the Vermeil years, then improved again when Herm was coach. So I'm not sure just how much credit he deserves for the drafting. But as long as we're talking about a GM who the hall of fame ceremony reminds us of being a good GM, that would be Polian. He built a team that went to 4 straight Superbowls and was fired after the 3rd!! That was one of the dumbest moves ever by an NFL team. To blame him for the team he built falling just short of the Lombardi 3 times is insane. He amassed the talent to get that close. Peterson never got that close, but got 20 years!

Come on, 93, 95, 97 with that defense they always had a chance. Shit happened in the playoff games, but the opportunity was there every year from 90-97. They finished top 15 in both points scored and points allowed in every year from 90-95.

Marty relied on his defense to create scoring opportunities, while asking his offense to not turn the ball over to create opportunities for the opposition.

They had one of the better O-Lines in the league, and ran the ball effectively.

That created the illusion of balance, but the fact was the offenses in all of those years were unable to effectively put points on the board against the best teams in the playoffs.

It was all just an illusion.

I believe that if you throw out the '93 team, which is the only one that did actually have a legitimate chance, add up all the scoring from every other playoff game by the Chiefs in the 90's, you'd come up with an average of 11-12 points per game.

The mistake there, as I've pointed out before, is relying on an aging, brittle QB to make through an entire season, and post season, while also relying on a QB that was demoted to back up when Montana went down.

Carl needed to find another backup.

He should have signed Steve Buerlein, not only as the backup, but QBoTF.
