That's a tough decision...

Man Forced to Choose Who to Save: Wife or Son Monday, November 30, 2009 It is the choice no parent — or spouse — should ever have to make. When New Zealand woman Vanessa Horton crashed her car into a river near the family home, her husband had to make the excruciating choice between saving her or resucing his son, who was trapped in the sinking car. Silva Horton, 13, drowned in New Zealand's Whanganui River on Saturday night after the car, in which he was a front-seat passenger, came off the road and cartwheeled down a steep 32 foot bank into the water. His father, Stacy, arrived from their nearby home in Whanganui, on North Island, less than two minutes after the crash to hear his wife screaming in the darkness and the family Mazda submerged, nose-down, three feet under the surface. As his wife floundered in the water, Horton tried to dive down to the car to rescue his son, but said he could not reach the teenager. "I tried to get down and get him but I couldn't, it was just too deep. And Vanessa was going under," Mr Horton told the Dominion Post newspaper. "I made a call to pull my wife to safety. I looked back and I could see the tail-lights but it was too far and I couldn't get him," he said. |

So he really didn't have a choice to make...he couldn't reach his son because the car was too deep and he couldn't have saved him anyway

Call me a cold SOB, but to me the decision is easy, I would save my son hands down, no question. And I know my wife would never have forgiven me if I did save her and not him.

You know something that worries me occasionally? I'm going to be in a big train wreck or something and there'll be fire everywhere and I'll be unconscious amidst the other passengers, and who do you think the firemen are going to save first? They'll probably be stepping right over me to get to the kids and then again to the women and then again for any pets and then again for the old people, and I'm going to be the last one in line to get saved, because no one really cares about saving bald middle-aged men.
And when you think about that, it makes no sense. Bald middle-aged men probably disproportionately produce the tax revenues that fund police and fire positions. If those rescuers were thoughtful, I'd be in the first group to be saved. Kids? They're just going to create more work for police and fire by sticking forks in outlets and stuff, and truth be told it was probably a kid who caused the train wreck in the first place. Police and fire personnel need to be cognizant of this stuff when they're running into those overturned train cars.

I have never had a kid so I can't really say what I would do but I have been in love with a woman and I could not imagine a scenario where I would save anyones life over hers. I just hope to God I am never faced with that decision.

Your wife can have another kid. The kid can't have another mother. Hospitals won't give you a choice in the matter. If there are complications during child birth, they will save the mother every time over the infant.

What if the other person is a heavily taxed business owner who disproportionately pays for public services?

I would too and I would hope my wife would do the same. While still rather young at 32, I've lived a lot of life. Had my share of ups and downs - I want my kids to have that as well. |

Can't really explain it...even though I love my wife, the kids she and I have had together trumps that and makes it better at the same time. To tell the truth, as much as I would miss having her in my life, it would actually hurt me more that the kids lost her. |
