Well, I'm getting paid right now, and I'm wearing jeans and a regular shirt. I just had some coffee and apple pie. I've been dicking around on the Interwebz all day while watching college football. I don't have to deal with customers or the general public. And I could probably take my pants off for hours at a time and no one would know.

I have quite a few:
- some travel, including overseas. - when we are interviewing new faculty members, free meals at some of the nicer local restaurants - other free lunches, or dinners, maybe one or two a month - Can choose the topic of my research, as long as I can make it successful - I generally wear slacks, but if I feel like wearing jeans I can a couple days a week - I almost completely manage my own time. Since I set the department teaching schedule, I get to pick when I get to teach and have a great deal of say in what I teach. I come in most days at 9:00. If I have a personal appointment or an off campus meeting I don't have to get approval to take time off. If I'm gone for vacation or a business trip, I just put it on my Outlook calendar and email my boss as a courtesy. As long as I get my work done and am around for about half of normal business hours (I'm around 90% of the time), no one is going to ask me where I am. I don't abuse it at all, but it is very nice. - I can work up to 20% of my time as a consultant as long as 1) I keep up with my normal duties and 2) it contributes to my professional development. In reality I probably can't handle more than 5 to 10%, but the opportunity is nice. - Off between Christmas and New Years every year. Sometimes I work from home during this time, but only because I decide to do so to meet goals I've set. - My salary is for 9 months, so my flexibility in the summer is even greater. If I have enough research to pay myself during the summer it is extra income. If not my time is my own. I always end up working most of the summer (when I'm not on vacation) at around 80% effort even when I'm not getting paid. - Tenure isn't what it once was, but my job security is pretty good. - I get to work with young people. They come to me for advice. I get to assist them getting their career off to a good start. It's a good feeling. |

Summers, weekends, and all federal holidays between September and June off. Oh, and if it snows enough, or if there is enough forecasted I don't have to go to work or worst case I go in late.

All the free tap water I can drink!
They also sprung for pizza on Black Friday. Great incentive to get up and be at work by 4am the day after Thanksgiving to deal with mobs of crazy people fighting to get $10 off of a Wii. I have a job interview Tuesday though, so hoping to find something with even more to offer! |
