Kansas City Chiefs Are An Early Pick To Make A Huge Turnaround In 2013

http://sportschatplace.com/football/...h/14/nfl-news/

[U][U][U]If you are looking for a team to make a quick turnaround in 2013, look no further than the Kansas City Chiefs.

The disaster that was the Kansas City Chiefs 2012 season brought sweeping changes to the franchise in the form of a new Quarterback, General Manager and Head Coach. In a results oriented business like Professional Football, a team that is incapable of scoring points is not going to stay in tact for very long.

Andy Reid was wise to choose Kansas City as his landing sport after his brand of leadership had run its course in Philadelphia. The regime of former General Manager Scott ***** did not do a bad job in acquiring overall talent, it merely overestimated Matt Cassel’s talent level and took the bullet for that decision. This team is not devoid of outstanding players and the new management team in Kansas City is rapidly checking off the boxes of the tasks that need to be completed before this team can go back to the playoffs.

The first and most important statement that new General Manager John Dorsey made was to go out and find himself a competent Quarterback in Alex Smith. Smith’s detractors will say that his success was due to playing for a team that is stacked with talent and capable of running the ball any time, any where. A further examination of this assertion reveals that it is not as true as you would think.

Certainly, the 49ers were one of the best running teams in the NFL with the best Offensive LIne in the league and one of the toughest players in the league in Frank Gore to tote the rock. The receiving corps however, was never going to make anyone forget about the days of Jerry Rice, John Taylor and Brent Jones.

During his time in San Francisco, Alex Smith had Vernon Davis and not much more. From a physical standpoint, Alex Smith tends to pale in comparison to Colin Kaepernick just as most of the Quarterbacks in the league do not possess that sort of skill set. Much of the criticism of Smth’s ability as a Quarterback comes from the comparison to Kaepernick which is not fair.

Shop Kansas City Chiefs new NFL Nike Jerseys at Fanatics!

Alex Smith is poised to bring the same level of ability and production to the table in Kansas City. He will have a 1,500 yard rusher in Jamaal Charles to make the play action passing game more effective and he has a go to stud Wide Receiver in Dwayne Bowe who is a matchup nightmare for most Cornerbacks in the league.

On Bowe’s opposite side, the 6’4” 230 lb. Jonathan Baldwin will be a similar nightmare if he can continue to develop and improve from his 20 catch 325 yard performance in 2012. Dexter McCluster provides a nice compliment to those huge receivers in the slot and his 52 catches for 452 yards should improve with a more accurate Quarterback in Smith.

Clearly, there will be some changes in the Offensive Line this off season but the Chiefs locked up their most valuable piece when they applied the Franchise Tag to Left Tackle Branden Albert. The Chiefs also have the first pick in this year’s draft and can use it to shore up the line further with another franchise Left Tackle like Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel who can play the Right Tackle position while the team decides whether or not it wants to sign Albert to a long term deal. Eric Winston was released prior to the Free Agent signing period in a move designed to free up more cap space.

On the Defensive side of the ball, you cannot accuse Scott ***** of failing to address the interior line positions as he added first round picks like Tyson Jackson and Dontari Poe to Glen Dorsey to give the Chiefs a very expensive if underachieving Defensive front. Jackson in particular had a contract with extremely unfriendly cap terms and was convinced to restructure his deal in such a way that his cap number was reduced by about 10 Mil in 2013. Glen Dorsey was released altogether and former New York Jet Mike DeVito was brought in to fill his slot at a better number.

There is some talk that the Chiefs will use the first pick in the draft to add more talent to the Defensive Line in the form of Utah’s Star Lotulelei for Florida’s Sharrif Floyd. Adding one of those two prospects to a lineup of Jackson, Poe and DeVito makes this an extremely formidable unit.

Another area of the Defense that John Dorsey has done an outstanding job of addressing through Free Agency is the Cornerback position which was a problem in 2012. In a division with Peyton Manning and his frightening corps of receivers, talent at the Cornerback position is indispensable. By adding former Falcon Dunta Robinson and Dolphin Sean Smith to Brandon Flowers, the Chiefs now have a considerable investment in 3 very good Corners. They also have one very solid Safety in Eric Berry and will have an opportunity to find another in the draft as the position is an area of strength in 2013.

In the coming draft, the Chiefs do not have any extra choices but they do have the first or second picks in every round. With these picks, Kansas City will be able to find some value at Safety, Wide Receiver and Offensive Line.

Barring catastrophic injuries, there is no way that this will be a 2-14 team in 2013. If Smith plays up to his San Francisco numbers, this is a team that will contend for a playoff spot. The running game is solid, the receivers are big and fast, the Offensive Line is bound to improve and the Defense will benefit from some positional upgrades and an Offense that will have fewer 3 and outs. If you’re looking for an early candidate for Coach of the Year, Andy Reid is one of the best bets around.

Which point are you talking about? Hill was an undrafted Free Agent in 2002, he signed with the Vikings. He didn't get any real playing time but went through Training Camp and practices for three years as the #3 guy. He did go play for Amsterdam for a year to get some playing time in while he was there. He was on the 9ers from 2006-2009.

Meanwhile Smith was drafted in '05 by the 9ers and went on and off the field as a rookie competing with Hill. In 2006 he was named the starter. In 2007 he was again the starter, but injured his shoulder. The HC at the time basically called him a pussy for not playing though it even though it was a pretty serious injury. He missed some games, tried to come back, couldn't play well with it. Eventually he had surgery for it. In 2008 he was trying to get the starting job back after the surgery. He couldn't play well enough to do it, losing the job to O'Sullivan. That's right. O'Sullivan. Later that year the 9ers found out that Smith's injury didn't heal properly, even after the surgery (gee, I guess he really was hurt badly?) and they put Smith on IR. Hill did later take the starting job again...from O'Sullivan as Smith was on IR at the time.

So..yeah. It's really not as simple as you make it out to be. Smith is a decent QB.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Alex Smith sucked most of his career.

During 2008 he was outplayed by a turd named Shaun Hill. At that point he was a veteran. And even next season, when he was a year older, he wasn't as good as Hill had been.

But yeah, Smith is "decent." Almost as "decent" as Matt Cassel was in New England. Yay!

You mean in 2008 when O'Sullivan was the starter, Smith was #2 and Hill was #3? And then Smith was put on IR because his shoulder was still messed up even after surgery, and then Hill beat out O'Sullivan for the stating job after Smith was put on IR? Oh, by the way, the highly unstable 9ers fired HC Mike Nolan and gave the job to Mike Singletary during this time.

I'm trying to say that he played with the same talent as Hill in 2007 and 2009, and yet Hill was a better QB in 2008. Does that make sense?

Shaun Hill had all the disadvantages that Alex Smith had, yet was able to play better.

But he wasn't. Hill couldn't beat out Smith with a busted shoulder, and Smith took the job away from him earlier with less NFL team experience and playing time.

I always considered Hill one of the better back up QB's. He was half way getting the job done in Detroit as well.

I can't help but think where the team would be right now if ***** was still in charge.
-maybe half the free agents that are signed currently
-overpaying for all of them
-2nd Rd. given up for Mallet.

Yuck, upset stomach thinking about it.

We have a last place schedule next year. It will be impossible for KC not to be a better team next year. And it won't mean JACK!

True enough, another somewhat surprising 10-6 season on a weak schedule should be considered something of a mirage, we've seen this before... its 2014 that will tell the whole thruth.

And if we follow the pattern of every other 49er QB we will suck in 2014.

I honestly don't get the Smith=Cassel shit, short of CP PTSD.

If Aaron Rodgers and the Mannings are Central Park West, Smith is Harlem and Cassel is the outer reaches of Long Island.

Smith may not be more game manager than load shoulderer, but Cassel couldn't muster even game manager unless it was against the worst teams in the league. He made brain farts that seemed previously unfathomable. He made simple passes in that flat that were so off target that they stopped the receiver in his tracks and got him run over like Letterman's stalker on the train tracks, the pants pooping under pressure fertilized a small farm one county over, his audibles were so obvious the defense could make the stop with a cigarette draped from their lips.

If we get a minimal return Smith and he's merely competent and cautious, it'll still be a huge upgrade.
