The niners lost the lead on that muff. They eventually overcame it to tie the game, unfortunately they couldn't overcome a second muff deep in their own end of the field.

It's fact that they are excuses. Alex Smith failed to convert 1 meaningful 3rd down.

Megatron doesn't make Matthew Stafford look good?
The Saints aren't primarily dominant in a dome? Tom Brady doesn't look better with a healthy Gronkowski? Matt Ryan and the Falcons didn't struggle without Julio Jones? Joe Flacco still wins the Superbowl without Anquan Boldin? Come on, you're smarter than that. At least I hope that you are. |

Smith essentially had Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree with no one else. Davis was doubled and sometimes tripled the rest of the game after his 2 TDs and Crabtree was still a very average WR couldn't shake one guy, Corey Webster, for the entire game. You can't throw for 1st downs if there is no one to throw to. |

I didn't just point out the weather, I pointed out the lack of weapons as well. Smith had virtually no options beyond Vernon Davis in that game. You know you're in trouble when your #2 and #3 WRs are practice squad level guys (Kyle Williams, Brett Swain, and Chad Hall.)

He scored 17 points with next to nothing around him, against a defense that held Aaron Rodgers to just 20 despite him having his full stable of WRs with him.
You're not going to do well against a defense that pretty much shut down: Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, Randall Cobb, Jermichael Finley, and James Jones with Aaron Rodgers throwing the ball. When the only receiving weapons you have are: Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams, Brett Swain, and Chad Hall. Compounding that issue was the weather during that game. Neither of the offenses were executing well because of it. Unless you actually believe otherwise? |

On the other side using that argument or one similar to it all the defense had to do was stop 1 of Mannings 3rd down conversions to stop their drive..All the punt returner had to do was catch the ball So either way you cut it if you hate Smith or like him all you have to do is to turn it around one way or the other..at the end of the day it's a team game and both the offense and defense have to hold up their end |

Oh yeah, and the same Giants defense held Tom Brady to just 21 points in the Superbowl.
Brady's stats: 27/41, 276 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT. FTR, Brady's weapons were: Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker, Deion Branch, and Chad Ochocinco. Even Brady's #5 target was a better player than Smith's #2 WR. Brady, a HOF QB playing in perfect conditions, couldn't do enough against that Giants defense to win the game despite the fact that he was playing with 3 of the most dominant skills players at their positions in the league. |
