Camera Suggestions?

Ok;

so the wife and I are in the market for a camera. We previously had a Sony digital camera for about 10 years but the wife dropped it and now it won't hold any settings etc.

So, it's time for another one. I'm by no means a professional photographer; but I also don't want some little $100 POS either. I'd like to have one that I could 'grow' into if I wanted to so to speak.

I think My budget is about $400-$600. I was looking at the Nikon D3200 DSLR....though, admittedly, I'm not 100% what "DSLR" is.
I like the design of it; I've held a few like it and they're much easier to hold IMO.

Suggestions?

Ended up buying the Nikon D3100 yesterday, $449. A few more bucks for a backpack, memory card and extra battery.

Took about 175 pics at the cookout today. Mostly multiple shots of the nieces and nephews playing on the slip and slide.

Camera is great. Right out of the box it's intuitive. Super easy to use and understand. Standard scenes and settings are great and turn out great pictures. So glad I went with this. Not ripping cannon at all. It was, literallya50/50deal.. Love this camera.

Thousand times easier than our old point and shoot. Though, I already want a zoom lens damnit

Congrats on the purchase! Since good glass doesn't come cheap, a great way to "try before you buy" is to rent it to see how you like it. If you don't have any local shops that rent, I highly recommed borrowlenses.com.

It's also good for getting glass to use for a specific use or event instead of tying up up the cash for a lens that you'd rarely use.

What do you want to know?

Canon/Nikon are about the same. Canon is a little faster for sports, Nikon has the best flash systems and colors to me.

* Buy only Nikon/Canon lenses. It's all about the glass.
* Don't buy anything with a plastic body

It all depends on what you want to do with your photos.

It's hard to get anything worth a damn for 400.00

Nikon D-800 with vertical grip is all you'll ever need.
I've been shooting Canon 20D's for many years now, and love them. While I'd love to upgrade them, I refuse to chase technology for technology's sake. And used to shoot Canon lenses exclusively, but took a chance on a Sigma and have been really happy with it too.

The good news is I've been able to give any number of people, family (wife and boys), scouts, and about any kid or parent in the stands at sports events the opportunity to discover the joy of photography (beyond a P&S) and the beauty of what many of always knew as a motor-drive. I have on on my first A-1 and used more film than the law should allow! And I paid for it in the dark room. Sorta miss those days - you just had to be better it seems.

But alas, I love to give a kid a 20D with a grip and a 200 and let them just go have fun. Give it to a parent and they'll be amazed how how easy it can be. Show them the difference between what a zoom and prime produce, and they'll still get the zoom, but want the prime... And after years of trying to coach and shoot, it's been a welcome relief to let other people show their creative side. They thinks it's so difficult when they see you do it, then, after you let them try it and forward them their own results, you're helping them shop. Love it... And you don't have to get deep with them, depth of field, circles of confusion, front lighting, silhouetting, LOL "ASA," none of it - that comes later...

But you're right about Canon vs Nikon, who cares, just get one and enjoy. If you can tell the difference in the grind then you should be a Pro. I say go with the one that provides the most logical menu system (for you) and you'll be very happy... And today's grind and coatings are a lot different given the near demise of film, but both are awesome.

Much debate here, but I'm with you overall. But Nikon's mirror lock-up has usually been superior to my Canon's, but I can deal with both... But I agree, just do it...

We love to take photos in the Rockies, and obviously of our kids.

Is the Sam's deal really a good deal for a Nikon 3200? I use Nikon Monarch scopes and they are nice, but I don't know shit about their cameras.

699 + 9.3% tax comes to around $760. Tell me it's worth it so I can buy my wife this camera and a Nightforce scope for my rifle.

If you're happy with the camera, then I'd take to the Internet, eBay and B&H and such, and find a comparable package (price plus shipping) that saves you that tax.

You'll have a good time with that.

Eventually when cash allows you are going to want to upgrade.

I don't like any aftermarket products so I say buy only Nikon products.

A good SB flash.

Eventually you will want a newer body, so keep that one as your backup.

When you can get yourself a good photo printer.

You can spend a lot of money here but you don't have to.

An Epson Artisan 50 for about 150.00 is all you will need unless you want to print 11 x 14.

Lots of great information here...thanks everyone. I think I'm going to start off with a used Canon 20D and that "nifty fifty" lens that someone mentioned. That'll start me up, with carrying case and memory card, for around $300. From there, I'll probably get some type of zoom lens.

I'll order soon and report back.

Enjoy!

When you're looking for the lens, anything in that 50mm lens is likely going to be a Mark II lens, which has a plastic lens mount. If you can find one, the Mark I lens has a metal lens mount and more durable.
