Do you return your shopping cart?

Last night at the grocery store I see a lady leave her shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot. The worst part about it is that there was literally 1 spot between her car and the cart corral. I was telling a guy at work this and he mentioned that he read that people who were successful in life return their carts. I looked for this article and nothing I found seems to be based on any data.

I figured that Chiefsplanet could provide some data.

Aldi is awesome, I'll gladly contribute and retrieve my quarter for the cart. I think it's a great policy.

Be careful. I hear that they're all in bad neighborhoods.

The cart corral is specifically designed to be used to store carts safely. If it can be used safely, then carts can be returned there. If the corral is full or if the weather is so bad that corralled carts could reasonably expected to become a risk to property, then the corral should not be used and the cart should be returned somewhere else safe.

I have zero doubt that there are lots of folks in the world who always return their carts and who will also remove stray carts from the parking lot, because that's something that I do, and I don't think of it as particularly virtuous. That's just common decency.

The problem with this is that when you do this, so does monkey see, monkey do. Everyone else after you does this and it begins a huge pile up during the busy times of the day and ends up blocking the front of the store for other people.

That cart guy isn't telepathic. He's out grabbing as many as he can to bring back into the store. By the time he gets to those piled up carts on the inside that you didn't return properly, it's overflowing and people walking out end up blocked by all the carts.

I think it is tge same system we have in Germany. You put the coin into the cart and if you being the cart back you get the coin back.

Yes it is very simple to swap quarters but I see carts in the at Aldi because they are too lazy to get their quarter back. They don't last long!!!

I would have to preform some braking tests on the magnetic locking carts. Something along the lines of getting one going at about 5-10 miles per hour (dead run) and them really fast 25mph (Tyreek Hill fast) and have it cross the line and see what the braking characteristics are both loaded and unloaded. Maybe we can square the tires on a few in the process. With only one wheel locking up it could be fun with some special groceries onboard.

As long as there is a quarter inside I cannot see a problem. If a guy brings the carts back he earns some quarters. It's the same as the bottles in Germany. Poor people collect a lot of bottles and earn money.

That doesn't seem like much of a problem in any store I've ever shopped in. Maybe some store layouts might lead to problems if you can only get to the exit through the register lines.

The Aldi chain started in Germany by a family named Albrecht.

We used to have bottle deposits here too. I'm sure there are areas in the US that still have them.
