Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

If you really think Matt Cassel = Alex Smith then I don't know that I can take any football take you have seriously.

Cassel has bottomed out in an enormous way. He couldn't sustain the success he had in 2010, or even come within 10% of that success.

Alex Smith is not a good QB. I won't pretend he is. However, he has put together his 2 best seasons as a pro, and actually beaten some good teams in the process.

Cassel hasn't beaten a single good team since he came here.

Smith is a far superior QB to Cassel. I don't care what 2010 stats you want to pull out about Cassel. He didn't beat a single playoff team with a winning record.

I trust Reid to get the most out of Smith. What that amount is, who knows.

Well at least you admit it is slightly. Which really doesn't do much for me considering the upside of such a pickup. We still will be mediocre, he can't win close games with big plays and he is another game manager which we seem to be quite astute at acquiring. I am tickled pink!

I have to be careful with how i talk about alex smith, to give him any credit, is to be a slurper, and while im a fan, i realize he has limitations, and hes not rodgers, brees, brady.....Hes alex smith.

But most years, they're wrong. This year, I'm not so sure.

I've never seen a QB class so universally panned. Most years, it's the exact opposite, as the media and media scouts (Mayock, Kiper, et al) overly hype college players and get QB needy fans into a frenzy.

This year, it's been completely opposite. The best available guy isn't exciting and looks like at best, a second rounder in any other year. The next best guy took a huge step backwards his senior season and can't even throw the football.

While a great player might emerge someday, the identity of the player is a mystery. If you're that uncertain about a player's ability, it would be foolish to spend a first round choice on that player, let alone #1 overall.

When you hear he can be had for a 4th rounder. Then rumor is he may cost 2 2nds? It takes awhile for the diaper rash ointment to heal the chapped ass.

They did the SAME THING the year after Roethlisberger, Manning and Rivers.

That's why Rodgers dropped so far.

Yet by Dorsey phylosophy to the draft they take BPA they can take back to back LT if they think they are BPA. They can sign Albert and still draft Joekel with the firsrt that's ok as long as the brain trust knows what they are doing. Same thing.

After going 30 years with out drafting a QB in the first I think it wouldn't hurt one damn bit to look at QBs in back to back drafts. If we can get one this year and he shows he got something that shows promise during the year then we may not have to worry about drafting one that high next year.

What's better, taking a chance on an unknown QB with top end talent (Geno, undeniably), or going with a sure thing (Alex Smith) when it means 9-7?

And Alex Smith is slightly above average. So answer these two questions and decide what to do.

Can Alex Smith win a Superbowl with his skill set? Answer = No

Can (fill in blank with whatever QB you think is best) win a Superbowl with his skill set? Answer = I have no ****ing idea!

So you draft best available guy, develop him and design a system around him. You already know the answer to question #1 so why take a lateral move when a higher reward option is available?

That's absolutely untrue. There was NO ONE saying that Eli Manning was a second round talent, let alone Philip Rivers. If there were questions about anyone, it was Roethlisberger but to anyone that watch him play or saw his bowl game, they saw the same exact guy that started 15 games for the Steelers that year.

Rodgers dropped because people questioned Tedford's system. To many Tedford's QB's failed in the NFL, so there were legitimate concerns as to whether or not he was a product of the system.

No one is questioning these things about Barkley, Smith, Wilson, Bray, etc. They have all very visible warts and concerns and none have proven worthy of a first round grade, let alone #1 overall.

Out of that group, Barkley did himself the biggest disservice by returning to USC his senior season. Now, his already questionable arm strength will be scrutinized even more.

Even so, without a true starting QB on the Chiefs roster, did you really expect them to wait until March 27th to even watch him work out?

it really depends on what you think Genos ceiling is. You called him top end. I'm guessing there are people, like Reid, that feel his ceiling isn't that high.
