HBO greenlights A Game of Thrones pilot! (spoilers)

EDIT: Changed the original header to mark this as the thread where spoilers are allowed (but not necessarily recommended...). Created a new, spoiler-free thread for Ice and Fire virgins...

This is awesome...

Huge, Huge News

Nov. 11th, 2008 at 10:29 PM

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

This episode was awesome as soon as Arya got a haircut.

God damn, can't wait to see her grow up and become a badass.

I'd like to see Arya orchestrate a cunning abduction of Cercei Lannister. Then, one night, Sansa delivers Joffrey into Arya's hands. Joffrey has no idea who she is of course, and she says "You cut off my father's head." They bring out Cercei and Joffrey watches Arya cut off her head with Needle. Then one of the Stark direwolves disembowels Joffrey alive.

Heheh. I think Needle is more of a stabber than a slicer.

The kids who play these roles are pretty damn good actors, even that little sh*t Joffrey.

They did a great job casting this show.

Sad to see Eddard Stark's character come to an end, got to say I was a little surprised to see him give up his honor in the end, even though I understand why he did.

I can't wait until the 2nd season.

I loved the part where Joffrey said that his mother taught him not to hit a lady and then he has his guy smack her around.

Great episode and nice way to cap off the season.

I'm still not sure why Dany walked into the fire though, and why she put the dragon eggs in there. Did she know, or at least have an idea, the eggs would hatch? Did she walk into the fire as a way to look god-like to the remaining villagers so they would follow her as a leader?

It was a cool ending but I don't think I fully grasp the context - maybe the book gave more details.

I haven't seen the episode. From what I remember, though, the fire "called" to her. She just felt compelled to act as she did. Magic and the supernatural are very much on the periphery of GRRM's work, but he tends to handle it with that sort of subtle mystery.

When the witch is performing the blood magic on Drogo, is it ever explained in detail?

To tide you over until Season 2:

Anyway, it's high time the series also received a video game adaptation, and that's exactly what Cyanide Studio is up to. Called Game of Thrones: Genesis, the upcoming real-time strategy game doesn't follow along with the events of the first book, but instead the 1000 years leading up to it. Regis Robin, game designer at Cyanide provides more detail.

Quote:
IGN: Regarding gameplay details, which factions do you actually play as? Can you pick a faction or are you locked into one? What types of units do they have at their disposal and are there any special mechanics, such as more powerful abilities for the notable characters?

Regis Robin: In solo or multiplayer mode you play as the head of one of the great houses of Westeros: Stark, Lannister, Arryn etc. The player can pick whatever house he wants. There are a variety of units at his disposal: military (knights, armies, bowmen…), diplomatic (envoys and noble ladies), economic (merchants and farmers) and underhand (assassin, spy, rogue, …). The main aim is to gain prestige and a given amount of prestige will allow the player to sit upon the Iron Throne and thus win the game. Several factors count toward prestige, but the main source is the number of alliances with towns and castles. This is where envoys and noble ladies come in. However, their work can be undermined, for example, by a spy or a rogue. The game is always in a constant state of flux and so the player must keep an eye on what's going on, everywhere. Each family can call on a special unit with unique powers. For example, the Starks have a direwolf which provides extra protection and detection capabilities.
